Milaknis buries big shots as Zalgiris claims 100th Euroleague win

Zalgiris Kaunas held on late to beat Panathinaikos Athens 76-70 for the club’s 100th Euroleague victory this century. Zalgiris improved to 4-6 and fifth place in Top 16 Group E, while Panathinaikos remains in fourth at 5-5. The hosts led by as many as 14 early in the third quarter, but Nikos Pappas led the Greens all the way back. The score was tied on three occasions in the fourth quarter and Pappas gave the visitors a slim lead, but Arturas Milaknis buried back-to-back threes to put his team up 70-66 with three minutes to go and the Lithuanian champs held on the rest of the way. Will Cherry paced the Zalgiris attack with 18 points, Paulius Jankunas added 14, James Anderson 13 and Milaknis 12 – all on threes. Pappas paced Panathinaikos with 21 points, Vlantimir Giankovits added 11 and Esteban Batista finished with 10.

First quarter: Defensive stand helps hosts to early lead

There seemed to be a lid on the rim early as neither team scored for two-and-a-half minutes until Jankunas broke the ice with a jump shot. Cherry added a three-pointer before Dimitris Diamantidis found a cutting Batista for a slam and the visitors’ first points. Jankunas banked in a shot to make it 7-2. Giankovits and A.J. Slaughter went hard to the basket to bring the Greens within 1. After a TV timeout, Anderson buried a three. Batista scored in transition and Jankunas matched him to make it 12-8. Batista muscled his way to another bucket before Robertas Javtokas scored inside for the hosts. Milaknis completed a four-shot minute-long possession with a three-pointer. Nikos Pappas also hit from downtown to make it 17-13.

Second quarter: Cherry carries Zalgiris to double-digit advantage

Anderson kept the hosts in charge after he grabbed an offensive rebound, drew a foul and sank 2 shots. Pappas went through the Zalgiris defense for a layup, but Lukas Lekavicius answered with a long pull-up jumper. Panathinaikos closed to within 21-18 on a Pappas layup and DeMarcus Nelson free throw. Siim-Sander Vene recorded a layup-plus-foul thanks to a great pass from Darius Songaila. Nelson picked up a steal and lobbed a pass to Gani Lawal for a monster slam. Edgaras Ulanovas drilled an open triple to set a 28-20 advantage midway through the quarter. Cherry scored and Anderson dunked on the break for a 12-point lead. Antonis Fotsis stopped the bleeding with the triple, but Cherry responded with a pair of triples sandwiched around a Batista bucket inside. Batista added another slam and reached 10 individual points. Jankunas and Diamantidis each split free throws to end the half at 39-28.

Third quarter: Pappas rescues Greens from 14-point deficit

Milaknis sank a three to give the hosts their biggest lead yet, 42-28, but Giankovits responded with back-to-back threes. Zalgiris used a timeout, but the momentum had shifted. James Gist fought his way to a layup and Pappas sank a triple. Gist scored again to cap a 0-13 run. Cherry scored a tough layup in the paint – and the free throw that came within it – and then Javtokas scored in the paint to restore a 6-point cushion. Diamantidis scored his first basket only to see Jankunas knock down an open three. Pappas responded with a pair of threes to get within a single point. Vene’s basket was matched by Loukas Mavrokefalides. Then Pappas split free throws to tie the score at 52-52. The stalemate remained for over a minute - Giankovits missed twice from the line – as both teams missed shots. Mavrokefalides gave Panathinaikos its first lead with a three, but Anderson’s triple tied it at 55-55.

Fourth quarter: Milaknis buries the big shots

Songaila’s second chance basket and a Vene jumper were both matched by Gist to keep the score tied. Anderson was fouled by Giankovits – his fourth – shooting a three and made the resulting 3 shots for a 62-59 Zalgiris edge. Mavrokefalides drove for a tough layup, which Jankunas countered with a jump shot. Giankovits buried a three from the top of the key to make it 64-64 with five minutes remaining. Pappas gave the Greens a slim lead again, but a Milaknis three on the shot-clock buzzer brought the crowd to its feet at 67-66. Milaknis’s fourth three of the night came with three minutes left and put the difference at 4. Diamantidis and Cherry traded layups. Milaknis fouled out with 1:27 remaining. Cherry added free throws for a 6-point edge with 39 seconds to go. Nelson missed twice from the line with 25 seconds left, but Ulanovas missed 2 too. Pappas drove for a layup with 15 seconds remaining. Giankovits fouled out and Jankunas all but iced the game with the resulting free throws with 14.4 seconds to go.

Το θολωμένο μου μυαλό...

Κακή ήττα για τον Ολυμπιακό με 64-73 καθώς όχι μόνο απώλεσε την ευκαιρία να μείνει μόνος πρώτος, θέτοντας παράλληλα και τις βάσεις για την 1η-2η θέση, αλλά έχασε και τη διαφορά των 6 πόντων που είχε κερδίσει τη Φενέρ στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Ολυμπιακός - Φενέρ - ΤΣΣΚΑ ισοβαθμούν με 8-2 στην 1η θέση του ομίλου. Ανησυχία για το Σπανούλη που είχε θλάση στον τετρακέφαλο εδώ και δύο μέρες και παρόλα αυτά προτίμησε να αγωνιστεί. 

Καλό μόνο το πρώτο δεκάλεπτο για τον Ολυμπιακό στο ματς, με την έννοια ότι ήταν ανταγωνιστικός αλλά και από άποψη παραγωγικότητας (19-19).

Στο 2ο η 5άδα που χρησιμποιήθηκε δεν έδειξε να βρίσκει χημεία και γενικά από εκεί και έπειτα ο Ολυμπιακός δεν φάνηκε να βρίσκει ρυθμό. Αντίθετα η Φενέρ άρχιζε να βρίσκει να ζεσταίνεται σιγά σιγά. Τις έβγαιναν στο παρκέ όσα είχε σχεδιάσει ο Ομπράντοβιτς . Έτσι κατάφερε να περάσει μπροστά στο σκορ, διατηρώντας σχεδόν σε όλο το ματς το προβάδισμα. Σκορ ημιχρόνου 35-39.

Ο Ολυμπιακός ήταν ακόμα μέσα στο ματς και μπήκε στο 3ο δεκάλεπτο δυνατά κάνοντας (όπως αποδείχτηκε) την ύστατη προσπάθεια να το γυρίσει, αλλά δε φάνηκε αποφασισμένος. Ίσα πού μπόρεσε να ισοφαρίσει 1-2 φορές, αλλά κάθε φορά η Φενέρ φύλαγε 1-2 τρίποντα για δώρο...

Ο Goudelock είχε πάρει φωτιά. Σκόραρε ασταμάτητα, είτε μαρκαρισμένος, είτε σε ελεύθερα σουτ κάνοντας ένα φοβερό ματς (24 π. - 6/7 τρίποντα). Όποτε κατάφερνε να ισοφαρίσει με το ματς ο Ολυμπιακός, η ευστοχία των Goudelock και Bjelica από τα 6,75 σκότωναν και έδιναν και πάλι αέρα στη Φενέρ. 

Το κακό 4ο δεκάλεπτο ήταν το επιστέγασμα της ήττας. Σκόραρε πλέον με το σταγονόμετρο και κυρίως με βολές. Δεν βρήκε καλό ρυθμό στο ματς επιθετικά και κλείστηκε πολύ καλά από τη Φενέρ. Η ευστοχία των Τούρκων συνεχίστηκε, έχοντας πλέον την ψυχολογία με το μέρος τους έβλεπαν το καλάθι βαρέλι. Στο ψυχολογικό κοντράστ, ο Ολυμπιακός δεν άντεξε στο τέλος να παίξει καλές άμυνες και η ήττα ήρθε φυσιολογικά. Τελικό σκορ 64-73 και το μέλλον των ερυθρόλευκων είναι δύσκολο, κυρίως γιατί δείχνουν να είναι σε περίοδο αγωνιστικής πτώσης.

Διάβασε σωστά το ματς ο Ομπράντοβιτς. Έκλεισε στην άμυνα πολύ καλά τον Ολυμπιακό και τα ατού του. Εξαιρετικό παιχνίδι επιθετικά από τη Φενέρ που διάβαζε όλες τις άμυνες του Ολυμπιακού. Χτύπησε το hard hedge και μοίρασε με σκαλοπάτι (short dive) τον ψηλό τη μπάλα στα φτερά βρίσκοντας το ελεύθερο σουτ, αλλά και εκμεταλλευόμενη τα miss match. Κατάφερε ο Ολυμπιακός να κάνει και τον Σαβάς - Τόμιτς, που δημιούργησε παιχνίδι για τους Τούρκους.

Στα αίτια της ήττας ακόμα θα πρέπει να προστεθουν:

- Οι Πειραιώτες έχασαν τη μάχη των ριμπάουντ (29-42). Τα ψηλά κορμιά της Φενέρ του πήραν πολύτιμα επιθετικά  και ανανέωσαν επιθέσεις

- Τα υψηλά ποσοστά της Φενέρ στα τρίποντα (11/20 - 55%) έναντι στα χαμηλά του Ολυμπιακού (5/21 - 23,8%)

- Οι πολλοί τραυματισμοί φαίνεται να έχουν αποδιοργανώσει το δημιουργικό παιχνίδι της ομάδας. Παίζεις με 4αρι όλη τη χρονιά τον Πέτγουεϊ και ξαφνικά πρέπει να μπει ο ερχόμενος από τραυματισμό Αγραβάνης να καλύψει το κενό.

- Υπάρχουν παίκτες όπως Σλούκας, Λοτζέσκι και Χάντερ που εδώ και 2-3 ματς είναι ντεφορμέ και δε συνεισφέρουν αρκετά.

- Ο Σπανούλης φάνηκε πως έπαιζε με πρόβλημα, καθώς όσο περνούσε η ώρα δεν μπορούσε να ανταπεξέλθει. Δε βοήθησε στο σκοράρισμα καθώς δεν μπορούσε να κάνει με δύναμη τα drive και αυτά που μπορεί, αλλά ήταν καλός στο δημιουργικό κομμάτι (10 ασ.). Έπρεπε να τον βγάλει ίσως και λόγο νωρίτερα ο Σφαιρόπουλος στο τέλος μπας αλλάξει το ματς.

- Βλέποντας το Λοτζέσκι σε κακή βραδιά, έπρεπε ο coach να δοκιμάσει και Παπαπέτρου που θα έδινε και ενέργεια στην άμυνα. 

Στα θετικά

- Εμφάνιση Ντάνστον που πήγε πολύ καλά επιθετικά καρφώνοντας με λύσσα πολλάκις το καλάθι της Φενέρ (12 π. - 5/6 δίποντα)

- Ο Πρίντεζης προσπάθησε να δώσει και αυτός πόντους από τη ρακέτα (11 π.)

- Ο Λαφαγιέτ πήρε την ομάδα από το χέρι όταν είχε κολλήσει στο σκορ και προσπάθησε με προσωπικά σουτ να συνεισφέρει. Αν και δεν ήταν καλός οργανωτικά και έκανε και πολλά λάθη στο τέλος.

Goudelock shines in Fenerbahce Ulker's pivotal win in Piraeus

Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul sent a message that echoed throughout the competition by downing Olympiacos Piraeus 64-73 in Group F at Peace and Friendship Stadium in Greece on Friday. Fenerbahce registered its seventh consecutive win and also grabbed its ninth straight road win - its last Turkish Airlines Euroleague road loss came on October 30. Fenerbahce and Olympiacos join CSKA Moscow in a three-way tie for first place, each with an 8-2 record. Fenerbahce also claimed the head-to-head tiebreak advantage over Olympiacos. Andrew Goudelock paced the winners with 24 points on 6-of-7 three-point shooting. Nemanja Bjelica added 16 points and 9 rebounds for Fenerbahce. Oliver Lafayette led Olympiacos with 14 points. Bryant Dunston scored 12 and Georgios Printezis had 11 while Vassilis Spanoulis dished 10 assists for the hosts. A wild three-pointer by Kostas Sloukas gave Olympiacos a 19-17 lead late in the first quarter, but a tip-in by Bjelica tied it at 19-19 after 10 minutes. An outstanding Goudelock helped Fenerbahce to a 25-32 lead, enough for the guests to keep a 35-39 edge at halftime. A three-pointer by Spanoulis tied the game at 46-46 midway through the third quarter, but Goudelock and Jan Vesely helped the guests regain the lead, 50-55, through 30 minutes. Three-pointers by Emir Preldzic and Bjelica sealed the outcome at 56-68 with two minutes left. Olympiacos kept trying but Fenerbahce cruised to a well-deserved, really important road win.

First quarter: Intensity rules the early going

Tremmell Darden got Olympiacos going with a turnaround jumper in a very physical start of the game. Free throws by Spanoulis soon gave the Reds a 4-1 lead. Hickman and Vangelis Mantzaris made free throws before a layup by Bogdan Bogdanovic kept Fenerbahce within 6-5. After Andrew Goudelock struck from downtown, Georgios Printezis hit his trademark jump hook in the lane. A dunk by Semih Erden put the guests back ahead, 8-10. Bryant Dunston shined with a big slam that Goudelock bettered with a triple. Othello Hunter took over with an alley-oop dunk and a close jumper by Printezis put the Reds back ahead, 14-13. Erden kept pacing Fenerbahce with a power layup. Mantzaris hit foul shots, but so did Hickman for a 16-17 Fenerbahce edge. Kostas Sloukas stepped up with an eight-meter bomb, but a tip-in by Bjelica tied the game, 19-19, after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Three-pointers give Fener the lead

Hickman nailed a corner three early in the second, as Fenerbahce improve its defense. Olympiacos was held scoreless for more than three minutes, while a free throw by Bjelica and a jump hook by Jan Vesely gave the guests a 19-25 edge. Spanoulis found Oliver Lafayette for a three-pointer, but Oguz Savas quickly answered with a put-back layup. Lafayette and Nikos Zisis split free throws and a layup by Dunston kept Olympiacos within 25-28. Goudelock found space with a wide open triple, as Fenerbahce started to circulate the ball better with Zisis and Emir Preldzic together. Vesely split free throws and a dunk by Dunston brought Olympiacos within 27-32. Darden split foul shots and Lafayette nailed a triple off the dribble for a 31-32 scoreline. Bjelica split free throws and a driving layup by Lafayette tied it at 33-33. Bjelica struck from beyond the arc and Goudelock copied him for a 35-39 Fenerbahce edge at halftime.

Third quarter: Goudelock keeps guests ahead

Dunston dunked again soon after the break, but Bjelica matched him with a driving basket for a 37-41 Fenerbahce lead. Bogdanovic briefly silenced the crowd with a big slam off the baseline, but Printezis followed free throws with a fast break layup. Dunston ignited the crowd with a huge dunk in traffic that Goudelock bettered with a big three-pointer. Spanoulis answered from downtown. Goudelock hit a one-handed floater in the lane, but free throws by Dunston tied it at 48-48. Goudelock nailed his sixth triple before free throws by Sloukas kept Olympiacos within 50-51. Vesely took over with a dunk, as the game turned into a battle. Vesely jumped to catch a high pass and put it in to give Fenerbahce a 50-55 lead.

Fourth quarter: Defense completes the job for Fener

Printezis split free throws early in the quarter, as Fenerbahce struggled to find the way to the basket. Olympiacos missed a couple of open shots and a layup by Savas gave Fenerbahce some fresh air at 51-57. A three-pointer by Preldzic forced the Reds to call a much-needed timeout, 51-60. The guests kept dominating the game with outstanding defense, but a three-pointer by Lafayette gave the Reds plenty of hope at 54-60. Hunter swished a jump hook that Bjelica bettered with a critical three-pointer. Olympiacos kept taking off-balance shots without much success and a wild basket by Goudelock sealed the outcome, 56-65, with over three minutes left. Both teams started to fight for the tie-break advantage, a critical issue to get the home court advantage in the upcoming playoffs. Another triple by Bjelica made it a double-digit lead for the first time, 56-68, and allowed Fenerbahce to finish off a near-perfect road win.

Επίθεση στην επίθεση...

Ο Ολυμπιακός πήρε το διπλό στο Μιλάνο, βάζοντας γερή υποψηφιότητα για τη μία εκ των δύο πρώτων θέσεων που θα του δώσει και το πλεονέκτημα έδρας στα Playoffs. Νίκησε την επίθεση της Αρμάνι με επίθεση, καθώς αμυντικά οι Πειραιώτες είχαν θεματάκια. Τελικά εξαργύρωσε το πολύ δυνατό του ξεκίνημα (1ο δεκάλεπτο 12-22) καθώς από το 2ο και μετά η Αρμάνι αξιοποίησε τα κενά στην άμυνα των ερυθρολεύκων και ήταν πιο παραγωγική (τα υπόλοιπα δεκάλεπτα 20-20, 24-24, 18-17). Κλειδί για τη νίκη και η ευστοχία σε κρίσιμα σουτ τριών πόντων σε καίρια σημεία (όταν η ομάδα είχε κολλήσει επιθετικά) στο 2ο ημίχρονο. Τελικό σκορ 74-83 και με τη νίκη αυτή ο Ολυμπιακός κάνει το 8-1 όντας μόνος πρώτος στον όμιλο. Τον ακολουθούν Φενέρ και ΤΣΣΚΑ με 7-2. Σημαντικό το επόμενο ματς για την διακράτηση της 1ης-2ης θέσης στο ΣΕΦ με τη Φενέρ.

Ο Ολυμπιακός μπήκε πολύ δυναμικά στο ματς και αιφνιδίασε την Αρμάνι. Στη συνέχεια οι Ιταλοί άρχισαν να σκληραίνουν την άμυνά τους και δυσκόλεψαν στο σκοράρισμα τους ερυθρόλευκους. Ο Ολυμπιακός όμως όταν η διαφορά κατέβαινε στους 2-4 πόντους, πάντα έβρισκε λύσεις ευστοχώντας και από μακριά. Έτσι ανέκτησε μια διψήφια διαφορά 10 πόντων για το ημίχρονο. 

Οι Ιταλοί παίζοντας το τελευταίο τους χαρτί στο Top-16, μπήκαν να χτυπήσουν το ματς. Αλλά και πάλι το ίδιο σκηνικό είχε στηθεί στο Mediolanum Forum. Με ηγέτη το Σπανούλη και δυναμική front line, έσπαγε το pressing της Αρμάνι που πήγαινε σε double team στο playmaker του Ολυμπιακού σε half court press. Όμως τα γκαρντ του Ολυμπιακού έσπαγαν είτε με drive είτε με σωστές πάσες την πίεση και έβρισκαν σκοράρισμα. Η Αρμάνι δε φημίζεται για την άμυνά της και το απόδειξε και σήμερα. Προσπάθησε όπως πάντα με τα επιθετικά όπλα της να πάρει το ματς, αλλά αυτό δεν ήταν αρκετό, καθώς φάνηκε πως και ο Ολυμπιακός ήταν αποφασισμένος να καθαρίσει το ματς.

Και η άμυνα των ερυθρολεύκων σήμερα δεν ήταν καλή. Είχε αρκετά προβλήματα, καθώς ο Σφαιρόπουλος επέλεξε μια σύνθετη άμυνα με heads-out αλλά και αλλαγές στα σκριν (προφανώς για να σταματήσει τα σουτ των Ιταλών που αρέσκονται να σουτάρουν με το που βρουν χώρο) και τον ψηλό μέσα στη ρακέτα να καλύπτει ουσιαστικά και τους δύο παίκτες της base line που έχουν ακροβολιστεί για σουτ, αλλά και τον παίκτη που κόβει μετά το πικ. Η Αρμάνι την έσπαγε εύκολα με πάσες στο τρίποντο, αλλά ευτυχώς για τον Ολυμπιακό απόψε είχε 4/23 τρίποντα, κάτι που βέβαια ήταν καθοριστικό για τη νίκη των ερυθρολεύκων, καθώς η Αρμάνι είναι ομάδα ρυθμού.

Σούπερ και MVP ο αρχηγός που ευστόχησε σε κρίσιμα τρίποντα στο 3ο δεκάλεπτο, όταν η Αρμάνι προσπαθούσε να το γυρίσει) και μοίρασε και 8 ασίστ, διαβάζοντας το "χαζό" pressing της Αρμάνι στα γκαρντ του Ολυμπιακού στο 2ο ημίχρονο. 

Εξαιρετική απόδοση από τα 5άρια. Ο Ντάνστον (12 π. - 6 ρ. - 2 κοψ.) ξεκίνησε το ματς σαν σίφουνας θυμίζοντας τον καλό περσινό του εαυτό. Έκανε και ένα εντυπωσιακό κάρφωμα για highlight! Και ο Χάντερ (14 π. - 6 ρ. - 2 ασ.) βοήθησε πολύ στο σκοράρισμα μέσα από τη ρακέτα, ποστάροντας δυναμικά και με καλή τεχνική τους αντιπάλους του. Έχει βελτιωθεί αισθητά και σε αυτόν τον το τομέα. Προσέφερε δε και αυτό ένα εντυπωσιακό alley-oop κάρφωμα από πάσα του Σπανούλη.

Απόντων των υπολοίπων 4αριών (τραυματίες Πέτγουεϊ - Αγραβάνης - Τσαϊρέλης), ο Πρίντεζης κάλυψε επάξια της θέση με σημαντική προσφορά στο σκοράρισμα (13 π. - 7 ρ.). Το κενό στο 4 κάλυψαν επάξια οι Ντάρντεν - Λοτζέσκι - Παπαπέτρου που αν και έχασαε ο Ολυμπιακός αρκετά ριμπάουντ, στις προσωπικές άμυνες τα πήγαν καλά. Ο νεαρός Παπαπέτρου έκανε δυναμική επιστροφή, έβαλε το τριποντάκι του, και έπαιξε σκυλίσια άμυνα στον Τζεντίλε που απόψε ήταν ο δήμιος του Ολυμπιακού (24 π.). Ο Ντάρντεν ήταν το τριάρι που έδωσε περισσότερες λύσεις επιθετικά, καθώς ο Λοτζέσκι ήταν σε βραδιά χαμηλότερη των στάνταρντς του.

Σημαντική η συνεισφορά και των υπόλοιπων γκαρντ. Ο Σλούκας αν και δεν πήγε καλά στο 2ο δεκάλεπτο, στο τέλος όταν επιστρατεύτηκε για 2η φορά, κινήθηκε έξυπνα με την μπάλα και κέρδισε πολλά φάουλ από τα κουρασμένα κορμιά των Ιταλών αμυντικών, που έπαιζαν γενικά (σκληρή) άμυνα με τα χέρια (είχε 6 κερδισμένα φάουλ). Και ο Μάντζαρης ήταν πολύ θετικός. Πήρε χωρίς να το σκεφτεί τα σουτ όταν του δόθηκε η ευκαιρία και έβαλε κάποια κρίσιμα, ενώ μοίρασε και 4 ασίστ.

Spanoulis, Hunter lead Olympiacos to eighth win

Olympiacos Piraeus kept first place in Top 16 Group F by downing EA7 Emporio Armani Milano 74-83 on the road on Friday. Olympiacos improved to 8-1 in Group F and could qualify for the playoffs as soon as next week. Milan dropped to 2-7 and has slim chances to stay alive in the competition. Vassilis Spanoulis led the winners with 14 points and 8 assists. Othello Hunter also had 14 points, Georgios Printezis added 13, Bryant Dunston 12 while Tremmell Darden scored 10 for Olympiacos. Alessandro Gentile led Milan with 24 points. MarShon Brooks added 17 for the hosts. Darden and Dunston shined early to give Olympiacos a double-digit lead, 4-15. Olympiacos led 12-22 after 10 minutes, but Brooks and Bruno Cerella helped Milan get as close as 25-26. Olympiacos found a new go-to guy in Hunter, who got help from Spanoulis to restore a double-digit lead, 32-42, at halftime. Gentile tried to change things for Milan after the break, but Hunter and an outstanding Printezis ensured the guests kept their lead, 56-66, through three quarters. Olympiacos improved its defense in crunch time, as Printezis and Dunston stepped up to seal the outcome minutes before the final buzzer.

First quarter: Dunston sparks strong Olympiacos start

Tremmell Darden got Olympiacos going with a free throw and a put-back basket by Printezis gave the Reds a 0-3 lead. After Gentile hit a six-meter shot, Darden nailed a turnaround jumper and a layup by Bryant Dunston boosted the guests' lead to 2-7. Gentile kept pushing Milan with free throws, however Darden nailed a baseline jumper and Spanoulis found Dunston for a slam that caused the hosts to call timeout at 4-11. Dunston hit free throws and Spanoulis scored in penetration to cap a 0-8 Olympiacos run. Brooks struck from downtown and Daniel Hackett added a layup to bring Milan within 9-15. Matt Lojeski stepped up with a fast break layup and Printezis scored again to restore a double-digit Olympiacos lead, 9-19. Dunston took over with a wild dunk-and-foul, which Brooks matched with his own three-point play to keep Milan within 12-22 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Milan rallies, buts Reds respond

Joe Ragland stepped up with a backdoor layup early in the quarter, as Olympiacos tried a smaller lineup with Darden at power forward. Ragland scored again in penetration, before the Reds called timeout at 16-22. Brooks hit a step-back jumper, but Hunter scored around the basket. Another driving layup by Ragland made it a 4-point game. Darden nailed a stop-and-pop jumper, but Shawn James split foul shots and Brooks nailed a jumper of the dribble to bring the hosts within 23-26. Vangelis Mantzaris bettered Bruno Cerella's jumper with a corner triple. Cerella insisted with a driving basket, but Hunter hit a jump hook and a free throw by Spanoulis restored a 27-32 Olympiacos lead. Spanoulis hit a three-pointer and fed Hunter for an alley-oop slam, but Ragland answered from downtown and Linas Kleiza added a put-back basket to make it 32-37. Spanoulis and Printezis hit foul shots and a layup by Hunter gave the Reds a 32-42 advantage at halftime.

Third quarter: Gentile keeps home team alive

Hackett buried a six-meter jumper immediately after the break and a free throw by Brooks gave Milan hope at 35-42. Samardo Samuels dunked, but Mantzaris answered from downtown for a 37-45 Olympiacos lead. Gentile took over with an off-balance basket in transition and hit 3 of 4 free throws to keep Milan within 42-45. Oliver Lafayette found Printezis for a layup, as Olympiacos entered the foul penalty. After Hackett and Gentile split foul shots, Hunter scored down low. Gentile kept pacing the hosts with a backdoor layup, but Spanoulis did better with a triple and found Printezis for an alley-oop layup. Gentile scored again, but Ioannis Papapetrou came off the bench and immediately delivered with a three from the corner. After Brooks scored in penetration, Samuels added a layup and Gentile kept Milan within 54-57. Kostas Sloukas and Brooks exchanged jumpers before Spanoulis struck downtown for a 56-62 advantage. Hunter scored in the paint and Printezis added his trademark one-handed baseline jumper - from the same spot as the 2012 Euroleague-winning shot - to give Olympiacos a 56-66 margin.

Fourth quarter: Olympiacos stays strong to snatch victory

Hunter banked in a close shot early in the quarter to cap a 0-9 run. Gentile stepped up with a close jumper, which Sloukas bettered with a layup-plus-foul that made it a 13-point game. Gentile stayed on fire with a driving basket and free throws. Milan entered the foul penalty with over seven minutes left, but even though Sloukas made free throws, Kleiza answered from downtown to make it 65-73. Printezis took over with another backdoor layup and a close basket by Dunston kept Olympiacos out of trouble at 65-77. Milan struggled to score when it mattered most and a free throw by Dunston seemed to seal the outcome at 65-78 with three minutes left. David Moss nailed his trademark corner three-pointer and Gentile scored in the low post, but a three-pointer by Lojeski allowed Olympiacos to start celebrating yet another road win.

Ήττα... 2ου δεκαλέπτου...

Πολύ δυνατός στο ξεκίνημα ο Παναθηναϊκός, αποφασισμένος να κερδίσει το ματς. Παίρνει το 1ο δεκάλεπτο με 21-16 και βασικούς του Σλότερ, Διαμαντίδη, Γιάνκοβιτς, Γκιστ και Μπατίστα. Σημείο κλειδί για την καλή παρουσία των πρασίνων στο ματς ήταν ο Μπατίστα που απασχόλησε αρκετά τους ψηλούς της Μπαρτσελόνα. 

Στα τέλη του 1ου-αρχές 2ου δεκαλέπτου που έγιναν αλλαγές λόγω κόπωσης, είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα ο Παναθηναϊκός να χάσει τη χημεία του και δεχόμενος 26 πόντους στο 2ο δεκάλεπτο (ενώ σκόραρε μόλις 11), ήταν και ο κύριος παράγοντας της ήττας, καθώς δεν μπόρεσε να ξαναμπεί μπροστά στο σκορ.

Ο Παππάς δεν μπόρεσε να περιορίσει το Ναβάρο που "σκότωσε" με τα σουτ του τον Παναθηναϊκό (δεν είναι να τον αφήσεις να βάλει τα 2-3 πρώτα...). Ακόμα και ο Αμπρίνες πήρε τον αέρα του Γιάνκοβιτς και έκανε τη ζημιά στους πράσινους. 

Βλέποντας τον Γιάνκοβιτς να έχει χάσει την ψυχραιμία του και το καθαρό μυαλό, όταν έκανε το 3ο του φάουλ έπρεπε να τον βγάλει ο Ιβάνοβιτς για να φρεσκάρει (πνευματικά) την ομάδα.

Επίσης ο Νέλσον ως αλλαγή του Διαμαντίδη, δεν οργάνωσε καλά το παιχνίδι. Ξέρουν και οι αντίπαλοί του ότι δεν είναι καλός σουτέρ και το αφήνουν στις περιστροφές ελεύθερο. (Χαρακτηριστική η τελευταία κρίσιμη επίθεση στο ματς του Παναθηναϊκού που έφτασε η μπάλα στα χέρια του και έχοντας το - σχετικά - ελεύθερο τρίποντο το φοβήθηκε και έχασε τη μπάλα από τα χέρια του) Ίσως θα μπορούσε να χρησιμοποιεί και λίγο τον Μποχωρίδη ο Ιβάνοβιτς να δει πως θα τα πάει. 

Η 2η 5αδα λοιπόν έχασε το ρυθμό που είχε ο Παναθηναϊκός στο 1ο δεκάλεπτο. Αντίθετα η Μπάρτσα με τα εύστοχα σουτ βρήκε ρυθμό. Έδειξε ανώτερη ομάδα. Ήταν πολύ ενεργητική και στην άμυνα και στην επίθεση, πίεσε τον Παναθηναϊκό και τον οδήγησε σε λάθη. Τα άσχημα νταμπλ τιμ και τις αργές περιστροφές στην άμυνα του Παναθηναϊκού διαβάζει σωστά η Μπάρστα τελειώνοντας τις φάσεις και πληγώνοντας τους πράσινους. 

Το ημίχρονο έκοψε το ρυθμό της Μπαρτσελόνα, υπέπεσε σε λάθη και ο Παναθναϊκός μείωσε τη διαφορά που είχε φτάσει ως και στο +12. 

Κράτησε και πάλι την ίδια 5αδα για 8 περίπου λεπτά ο Ιβάνοβιτς. Μετά την άλλαξε σταδιακά αυτή τη φορά. Ευτυχώς βελτιώθηκε ο Νέλσον και ανέβασε την ομάδα. Ο Γκιστ έδωσε ενέργεια που δεν έπαιξε πολύ στο 1ο ημίχρονο κερδίζοντας και αρκετά φάουλ από τους Καταλανούς.

Δεν μπορεί όμως να φτάσει την Μπαρτσελόνα κυρίως λόγω της κακής αμυντική του λειτουργίας. Αφήνει στις περιστροφές τα σουτ και τα τρώει. Ευτυχώς βγήκε ο Pleiss με 5 φάουλ που ήταν ασταμάτητος από του "πράσινους" αμυντικούς. Έκανε φοβερά πικ εν ρολ με τον Ουέρτας. Αντίθετα ο Τόμιτς δε βοήθησε πολύ στο σκοράρισμα την Μπαρτσελόνα. Τους πράσινους "σκότωσε" ακόμα και ο Ντόλεμαν με 21 π. που έβαλε τα κρίσιμα ελεύθερα σουτ. 

Τελευταία 3 λεπτά έγιναν διαγωνισμός τριπόντων καθώς επήλθε σωματική και πνευματική κούραση στους παίκτες και των δύο ομάδων. Η Μπαρτσελόνα διατηρεί ένα σταθερό προβάδισμα 5 πόντων που δεν καταφέρνει ποτέ ο Παναθηναϊκός να τη φτάσει, λόγω αστείων λαθών που χάνει τσάμπα κατοχές. 

Με δυο σερί κρίσιμα τρίποντα από Σλοτερ και Γκιστ το -8 το κάνει -2. Αλλά το μοιραίο λάθος από  το Νέλσον που χάνει την μπάλα από τα χέρια του (δεν ήταν σίγουρος τι ήθελε να κάνει) και κάνει κακή πάσα στον Γκιστ που του φεύγει και αυτού με τη σειρά του από τα χέρια δίνοντας την κατοχή στους Καταλανούς.

Ούτε το μοναδικό off-balance τρίποντο του Διαμαντίδη στη συνέχεια με ταμπλό δε στάθηκε ικανό να ανατρέψει την κατάσταση. Τελικό σκορ 77-81.

Στα highlights της βραδιάς οι τάπες των Γιάνκοβιτς και Διαμαντίδη στον Τόμιτς. 

Ο Ιβάνοβιτς σαφώς και χάλασε τη χημεία της ομάδας με το rotation που επέλεξε να κάνει. Δείχνει και να ξεχνάει παίχτες στον πάγκο. Άφησε τον Γκιστ εκτός πολύ στο 1ο ημίχρονο, ξέχασε τον Γιανκοβιτς στο 2ο...

Μετά και την αποψινή ήττα του από την Μπαρτσελόνα, ο Παναθηναϊκός, όπως είχαμε επισημάνει και σε προηγούμενες αναρτήσεις, ουσιαστικά θα παλέψει για την 3η-4η θέση, καθώς δεν τον ευνοεί και πρόγραμμά του πολύ.

FC Barcelona climbs into second place by stopping Panathinaikos

FC Barcelona took the lead for good in the final minute of the first half and held off Panathianikos’s second-half rallies for a 77-81 victory at Olympic Sports Center Athens on Thursday. The win lifted Barcelona to 6-3 and into a tie with Maccabi Electra for second place. Barcelona hosts Maccabi next week. Panathinaikos dropped to 5-4 and sits in fourth place in Top 16 Group E. Justin Doellman posted 21 points and 7 rebounds for the winners, while Juan Carlos Navarro scored 17 and Tibor Pleiss netted 15 in as many minutes before fouling out. Esteban Batista posted 16 points and 9 rebounds, James Gist scored 14 and Dimitris Diamantidis totalled 12 points and 6 assists for the Greens. Batista helped stake the hosts to an early lead, but Alex Abrines scored 8 points and Tomas Satoransky delivered 4 assists in a 0-12 run to end the first half with Barcelona ahead 32-42. Panathinaikos got within 2 in both the third and fourth quarters, but Barcelona always had an answer as it held on for the victory.

First quarter: Batista helps Greens take charge early

Panathinaikos won the opening tip and struck first through a Gist three-pointer. After a pair of rejections from Vlantimir Giankovits and Batista, Ante Tomic split free throws for the visitors’ first point. Batista went to work inside with a pair of baskets inside to make it 7-1. Doellman’s offensive rebound set up Satoransky for a Barcelona three. After Gist scored for the Greens inside, Doellman scored and was fouled. Batista scored a second-chance basket and Doellman drilled a three to make it 11-9. Batista and Diamantidis re-extended the Greens’ advantage to 6. Pleiss came in for the visitors and Satoransky immediately found him for a slam, but Antonis Fotsis dunked and was fouled by Pleiss at the other end. Navarro drained an open three in transition. Fotsis quickly answered with a jumper. Pleiss and Fotsis made free throws and Loukas Mavrokefalides’s tip in was ruled to com after the buzzer, leaving the score 21-16 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Abrines, Satoransky turn things around with 0-12 run

Pleiss scored inside to start the quarter and Navarro’s floater cut the difference to 1. After Nikos Pappas sank free throws, Navarro tied the game at 23-23 with a three-pointer. Marcelinho Huertas banked in a second-chance opportunity to give Barcelona its first lead. Gani Lawal tied it with a slam, but Navarro was left open and punished the hosts with another three. Pappas answered with a jumper before throwing a pass to Lawal for an alley-oop as the Greens wrested the lead back, 29-28, midway through the quarter. Nearly two minutes passed without a point from either team until Doellman sank free throws. A.J. Slaughter buried a three-pointer, but Abrines – after missing a three-pointer – stole the rebound from Giankovits and scored a layup to make it 32-32. Tomic finally scored his first basket and made it a three-point play. Abrines added a tough layup and a triple, which were both assisted by Satoransky. The Barcelona point guard found Tomic for a slam to make it 12 unanswered points to end the half with the visitors up 32-42.

Third quarter: Hosts chip away at the deficit

Gist opened the second half with 2 free throws for the hosts. Doellman drained a three only to see Slaughter match him. Tomic scored thanks to a well-placed pass from Brad Olson. Diamantidis sank a pair of free throws as the difference remained in the 8-10 point range. Satoransky’s layup was matched by Batista. Diamantidis fed Batista for a reverse layup that made it 43-49 midway through the quarter. After a timeout, Panathinaikos attacked again as Diamantidis’s steal set up a Gist slam. The Greens’ playmaker added free throws to cap an 8-0 run that brought his team within 2. Marcelinho Huertas ran the pick-and-roll with Pleiss, who finished with a slam. Deshaun Thomas made it 47-53 with an offensive rebound, basket and foul. Pappas scored a tough layup to keep it close, but Pleiss answered with a jump hook. DeMarcus Nelson muscled his way to a three-point play with 20.3 seconds left in the quarter. Pleiss’s dunk in the closing seconds of the quarter made it 52-57.

Fourth quarter:

Gist assisted to Batista for a layup, but Marcelinho Huertas fed Pleiss for a monster slam and foul to make it 54-60. Batista drew Pleiss’s fourth foul and sank 2 free throws. Doellman hit a jumper and Panathinaikos coach Ivanovic was called for a technical foul. Navarro made the free throw for a 56-63 lead. Pleiss fouled out with seven minutes to go and Gist made the resulting foul shots. Doellman matched him at the other end. After Nelson assisted Fotsis, Doellman and Diamantidis swapped threes to make it 63-68 with less than five minutes to go. Abrines knocked down 2 free throws and Nelson spun for a tough basket. The teams continued to trade points as Doellman hit a long jumper and Nelson converted 2 free throws. Diamantidis came up with a huge rejection of Tomic. Navarro nailed a three, but Slaughter did the same. The arena erupted when Gist drilled a three with 1:34 remaining to make it 73-75. Doellman banked in a tough shot to make it a two-possession game. Fotsis split free throws with 57.5 seconds to go. After Doellman missed a tough jumper, Panathinaikos turned it over. Navarro iced the victory with a pair of free throws with 10.9 seconds on the clock. Diamantidis managed to bank in a lucky three, but Satoransky’s free throws ended the game.
