Αγχωτικός, κακός, αλλά τυχερός...

Σε ένα κακό μπασκετικά ματς, ο Παναθηναϊκός κατάφερε και πήρε σημαντική νίκη απέναντι στη Μάλαγα με 68-66 σε ένα φινάλε που η τύχη ήταν με το μέρος του. Η ζώνη του Πλάθα κόλλησε επιθετικά τους πράσινους δίνοντας το προβάδισμα στη Μάλαγα, αλλά τελικά η εμπειρία του Γκιστ που έβγαλε τρομερή άμυνα στον Νέλσον και πήρε καθοριστικό ριμπάουντ και φάουλ στο τέλος, και το μεγάλο τρίποντο του Φελντέιν, έκαναν το 68-66 (από 64-66) και ο Παναθηναϊκός πήρε τη σημαντική νίκη. Έκανε το 1-1 και ατενίζει το μέλλον του ομίλου με αισιοδοξία.

 Ο Παναθηναϊκός ξεκίνησε καλά, κυκλοφόρησε σωστά τη μπάλα, την πέρασε από το 5 και είχε τον Καλάθη για ακόμα μια φορά σε καλή απόδοση.

Τα πάντα όμως άλλαξαν στο 2ο ημίχρονο με τη πολύ καλά στημένη ζώνη του Πλάθα. Οι πράσινοι 2-3 φορές μόνο κυκλοφόρησαν καλά την μπάλα. Κρίσιμο 4ο φάουλ του Καλάθη στο 28'. Μέχρι τότε έπαιζαν μαζί αρκετά στο 1-2 οι Καλάθης - Διαμαντίδης. Το κύριο σκοράρισμα των πράσινων είναι στο διάστημα αυτό από τον Πάβλοβιτς που σκοράρει απέξω με σουτ. Τα λάθη όμως στην άμυνα δίνουν πόντους στη Μάλαγα που λόγω έλλειψης του Κουσμίνσκας, οι Ισπανοί παίζουν με πολλά γκαρντ και έτσι πιέζουν καλά τα (λίγα) γκαρντ του Παναθηναϊκού (που πονάει στη θέση).

Έτσι ο Διαμαντίδης αρχίζει και κουράζεται (ζητάει αλλαγές στα σκριν, κάνει φάουλ στην άμυνα αφού χάνει εύκολα τον αντίπαλό του) και ο Παππάς που τον αντικατέστησε δεν μπόρεσε να βοηθήσει ούτε επιθετικά, ούτε αμυντικά. Η ζώνη του Πλάθα έχει κολλήσει επιθετικά τους πράσινους που σε όλο το 4ο δεκάλεπτο έχει σκοράρει για 6' μόνο 3 πόντους. Η Μάλαγα κλέβει μπάλες και ελέγχει το ρυθμό, με τον  Σμιθ σκοράρει κατά βούληση και έτσι η Μάλαγα κάνει το 64-66.

Μετά το 5ο φάουλ του Καλάθη, ο Τζόρτζεβιτς επιλέγει έξυπνο χαμηλό σχήμα στην άμυνα με Διαμαντίδη - Φελντέιν - Πάβλοβιτς - Γιάνκοβιτς - Γκιστ και αλλαγές σε όλα τα σκριν. Εκεί ο Γκιστ παίρνει τον Νέλσον στην αλλαγή μετά τον πικ εν ρολ και βγάζει άμυνα από αυτές που μόνο αυτός ξέρει, ταπώνοντας μεγαλοπρεπώς τον αντίπαλό του. 

Το 64-66 παραμένει και στην επίθεση ο Φελντέιν βγαίνει για τρεις, αλλά αστοχεί. Μαχητικό ριμπάουντ και φάουλ από τον Γκιστ που ευστοχεί στην 1η βολή. Αστοχεί στη 2η, αλλά από τα χέρια του Τόμας η μπάλα είναι ξανά για τους πράσινους στα 23'. Ο Φελντέιν ξαναβγαίνει για τρεις με πολύ καλύτερες προϋποθέσεις αυτή τη φορά και ευστοχεί! Είναι το 1ο του από τα 5 τρίποντα που εκτέλεσε και το κρισιμότερο. Το 68-66 είναι γεγονός και στα τελευταία 11.4" ο Παναθηναϊκός βγάζει άμυνα καθώς έκλεισε καλά τους σουτέρ της Μάλαγα, που ήταν στατική και τελικά η μπάλα έφτασε στον Σμιθ που αστόχησε.

Diamantidis leads Panathinaikos to big home win

In an outstanding back-and-forth battle that literally went down to the final shot, Panathinaikos Athens registered its first win in Top 16 Group E by edging Unicaja Malaga 68-66 in the Greek capital on Friday. Both teams now have 1-1 records in Group E. Dimitris Diamantidis led the winners with 17 points and 7 assists. Sasha Pavlovic added 10 points for Unicaja. Jamar Smith led Unicaja with 22 points while Dani Diez grabbed 10 rebounds for the guests. Diez and Smith helped Unicaja to an early lead, 7-8. Panathinaikos found a go-to guy in Diamantidis, who led the Greens to a 21-17 lead after 10 minutes. A three-pointer by Edwin Jackson tied it at 24-24, but Diamantidis and James Feldeine fueled a 7-0 run to restore a 31-24 Panathinaikos margin. Unicaja recovered and a layup by Diez tied the game at 33-33, but Diamantidis and Nick Calathes put Panathinaikos back ahead, 37-33, at halftime. A three-pointer by Pavlovic gave Panathinaikos its biggest lead, 47-39, but an outstanding Smith brought Unicaja within 58-55 after 30 minutes. Carlos Suarez struck from downtown to complete his team's comeback at 61-62. Unicaja held a 64-66 lead already in the final minute, but a free throw by Gist and a go-ahead triple by Feldeine gave the Greens a 68-66 edge and Smith missed from downtown at the buzzer.

First quarter: Diamantidis shines early for Greens

Calathes got Panathinaikos going with a driving layup and bettered De Marcus Nelson's free throws with a corner triple that gave the Greens a 5-2 lead. Nelson kept pacing Unicaja with a put-back basket, which Vasilis Charalampopoulos matched with foul shots. Dani Diez shined with a backdoor layup, as Unicaja improved its defense. A four-meter jumper by Smith soon gave the guests their first lead, 7-8. James Feldeine scored in transition and a layup by Ognjen Kuzmic restored an 11-8 Panathinaikos lead. Diez took over with a fast break layup, before Sasha Pavlovic made free throws. A three-pointer by Smith tied it at 13-13. Diamantidis provided a highlight with a driving layup, which he followed with free throws. Alberto Diaz split foul shots and a catch-and-shoot triple by Edwin Jackson tied it again, 17-17. Miroslav Raduljica scored down low and a driving layup by Diamantidis gave the Greens a 21-17 edge after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Panathinaikos keeps slim lead

Fran Vazquez rescued Unicaja with a put-back slam early in the quarter. Antonis Fotsis made free throws and a step-back jumper by Jackson kept Unicaja within 23-21. Kuzmic split foul shots and a three-pointer by Jackson tied it at 24-24. Diamantidis nailed a triple off a Panathinaikos timeout and Calathes banked in a close shot to give the Greens some fresh air. Unicaja had started to take off-balance shots without much success and a steal by James Gist allowed Feldeine to give his team a 31-24 margin, prompting a Unicaja to call timeout. Smith beat the shot clock with an off-balance three-pointer and free throws by Diez kept Unicaja within 31-29. Diamantidis found Georgios Papagiannis for an alley-oop slam, but Will Thomas hit foul shots and a fast break layup by Diez tied it at 33-33. Diamantidis made free throws and Calathes restored a 37-33 Panathinaikos lead at halftime.

Third quarter: Unicaja keeps all options alive

Radujlica scored around the basket immediately after the break, but Richard Hendrix quickly answered with a jumper. Raduljica fed Gist for a close basket, but Thomas matched it with a one-handed dunk before a layup by Hendrix made it 41-39. Gist rescued Panathinaikos with a corner triple and Pavlovic copied him with a bomb from downtown that caused Unicaja to stop the game at 47-39. Gist split free throws to cap a 7-0 run, but Diaz stepped up with a three-pointer. Thomas split foul shots and Smith hit both attempts to bring Unicaja within 48-45. Calathes found Raduljica for a two-handed slam and after Vazquez nailed his trademark mid-range jumper, Pavlovic buried another triple for a 53-47 Panathinaikos lead. Smith and Diamantidis joined the three-point shootout, as Calathes headed to the bench with 4 fouls. Smith kept pushing Unicaja with back-to-back jumpers to bring his team within 58-55.

Fourth quarter: down till the final shot

Both teams struggled to score early in the fourth quarter until a red-hot Smith shined with a driving layup. Panathinaikos struggled to score for almost two minutes until Kuzmic took over with a three-point play. Nemanja Nedovic hit a mid-range jumper and a three-pointer by Carlos Suarez completed Unicaja's comeback, 61-62. The Greens struggled against the guests' 2-3 zone defense and brought Calathes back in the game to improve their ball circulation. Smith swished another jumper and an off-balance basket by Pavlovic brought Panathinaikos within 63-64 with three3 minutes left. Diamantidis split free throws, but a dunk by Thomas put Unicaja back ahead, 64-66. Calathes missed twice from downtown, but great defense gave Panathinaikos the ball back with 34.4 seconds remaining. Gist drew a foul and split free throws with 23.8 seconds left. He missed his second attempt, but the Greens got the ball back, as Thomas could not grab the offensive board. Diamantidis found Feldeine for a three-pointer that restored a 68-66 Panathinaikos edge with 11.4 seconds left. Unicaja had a chance to win the game, but Smith missed from downtown at the buzzer.

Νίκη και φύγαμε για 8άδα...

Μεγάλη και σημαντική νίκη με 69-60 πέτυχε στο ΟΑΚΑ ο Παναθηναϊκός επί της βασικής αντιπάλου του Μάλαγα, στη διεκδίκηση της πρόκρισης για την 8άδα. Έκανε το 7-6, άφησε τη Μάλαγα στο 5-8 και σε συνδυασμό με την ήττα της Φενέρ στη Βιτόρια από τη Λαμποράλ (που έμεινε και αυτή στο 5-8), πλέον έχει περάσει σίγουρα στην επόμενη φάση, όπως και ο Ολυμπιακός ανεξάρτητα από το τι θα συμβεί στον μεταξύ τους αγώνα, που θα έχει τυπικό χαρακτήρα. Τι καλύτερο για το ελληνικό μπάσκετ και τους μπασκετόφιλους που θα απολαύσουμε τις ομάδες μας, ίσως και για 10 ματς ακόμα... We feel devotion!

Ο Παναθηναϊκός απόψε ήταν καλός, έχτισε διαφορά στην αρχή αν και άστοχος στο 1ο ημίχρονο από έξω, κατάφερε με σερί 14-1 να πάρει διαφορά με τους Ούκιτς, Λάσμε και Κάρι και να θέσει τις βάσεις για τη συνέχεια. Τα 3 γρήγορα φάουλ του Λάσμε στο 2ο δεκάλεπτο πήγαν να ταράξουν τις ισορροπίες καθώς "έμπαζε" στη ρακέτα, αλλά οι Πράσινοι κατάφεραν να ανταπεξέλθουν καθώς η Μάλαγα ήταν πολύ άστοχη από τα 6,75 (είχε 0/11 τρίποντα στο 1ο ημίχρονο). Σκορ ημιχρόνου 33-28.

Στο 2ο ημίχρονο η Μάλαγα πήγε να κάνει το colpo groso και κατάφερε να ισοφαρίσει σε 37-37, αλλά ως εκεί άντεξε. Μίλησε η ψυχή του Παναθηναϊκού που με σερί 10-0 άνοιξε τη διαφορά και από εκεί και έπειτα (25') οι Ανδαλουσιανοί άρχισαν να πιστεύουν πως δεν το γυρίζουν και σχεδόν το παράτησαν. Αν και αρκετά άστοχος στο 1ο ημίχρονο, ο Παναθηναϊκός βελτίωσε πολύ τα ποσοστά του από τα 6,75 και βρήκε την καλύτερη απάντηση στη ζώνη του Πλάθα που δε στάθηκε εμπόδιο. "Καταλύτης" και ο Μαυροκεφαλίδης που με την είσοδό του από το 4ο φάουλ του Λάσμε, έβαλε τρελό τρίποντο με ταμπλό (οι μοναδικοί του πόντοι), έκανε μια τάπα και βοήθησε την ομάδα να κρατήσει τη διαφορά. Σκορ δεκαλέπτου 55-41.

Έπαιξε για ακόμα μια φορά με πολλά τρίποντα ο Παναθηναϊκός και πρέπει αυτές τις 2 βδομάδες που έχει χρόνο να δουλέψει πολύ στην επίθεση, όπως παραδέχτηκε και ο Αλβέρτης ότι έτσι γίνεται. 

Παιχνίδι με το χρονόμετρο έκανε στο 4ο δεκάλεπτο ο Παναθηναϊκός, αφού στην ουσία κοίταξε πως θα διαχειριστεί με την πείρα του τη διαφορά και όχι πως θα σκοράρει. Ευτυχώς δεν του στοίχισε, αφού σκόραρε μόλις 14 πόντους με τη Μάλαγα να κάνει την απέλπιδα προσπάθεια, η οποία τελικά σταμάτησε σε ένα αυτοκρατορικό μπλοκ του Λάσμε στον Κουσμίνσκας. Τελικό σκορ 69-60.

Diamantidis leads Panathinaikos back to playoffs

Panathinaikos Athens advanced to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague playoffs from Top 16 Group E by downing Unicaja Malaga 69-60 in front of 13,200 fans in the Greek capital on Thursday. Panathinaikos improved to 7-6 and locked up a playoff spot thanks to Fenerbahce Ulker’s 95-73 road loss against Laboral Kutxa Vitoria. Those results also sent Panathinaikos’s archrival Olympiacos Piraeus into the next stage. Dimitris Diamantidis led the winners with 13 points and 6 assists. Stephane Lasme added 10 points for Panathinaikos. Vlado Stimac led Unicaja with 12 points. Back-to-back baskets by Fran Vazquez gave Unicaja an early 2-6 lead. It didn't last long, however, as Roko Ukic and Lasme fueled a 14-1 run, which Ramel Curry capped with a three-pointer for a 16-7 lead. Mike Batiste soon boosted Panathinaikos's lead to 24-12 early in the second quarter. Unicaja found a go-to guy in Ryan Toolson, who found help from Domas Sabonis to bring the guests within 33-28 at halftime. Unicaja improved its defense after the break and Stimac tied it at 37-37. Diamantidis showcase his all-around skills, as Curry and Antonis Fotsis struck from downtown in a 10-0 run that put Panathinaikos ahead for good, 47-37. The Greens improved their margin to 55-41 through three quarters and kept a safe margin throughout the fourth to cruise to a critical win. 

First quarter: Greens use 14-1 run to surge ahead 

Ukic got Panathinaikos going with a one-handed floater in the lane. Mindaugas Kuzminskas took over with a put-back slam, as the guests used Zoran Dragic to prevent Diamantidis from circulating the ball fluidly. Vazquez finished a long, two-chance offense with a jumper that gave Unicaja its first lead, 2-4. Vazquez kept pacing Unicaja with a put-back layup. Lasme scored around the basket and a driving layup by Ukic tied it at 6-6. Unicaja had outrebounded the Greens 1-10 in the early minutes, but had only made 3 of 12 shots. Fotsis split free throws and a layup by Lasme gave Panathinaikos a 9-6 lead. Nik Caner-Medley made 1 of 2 foul shots before Jonas Maciulis nailed a running hook. A layup in transition by Zack Wright made it a 6-point game. Curry struck from downtown to cap a 14-1 Panathinaikos run. Txemi Urtasun and Stimac made free throws, but a three-point play by Diamantidis made it 19-10. Free throws by Carlos Suarez brought Unicaja within 19-12 after 10 minutes. 

Second quarter: Toolson rescues Unicaja 

Curry sank a six-meter jumper early in the quarter, as Unicaja kept struggling to score. Meanwhile, a power layup by Lasme gave Panathinaikos its first double-digit lead, 23-12. Lasme returned to the bench with 3 fouls, but the Greens kept rolling. After Batiste split free throws, a floater by Jayson Granger brought the guests a bit closer, 24-14. Ukic shined with a driving layup, but Stimac scored down low and free throws by Sabonis gave Unicaja hope at 26-18. Even though Unicaja dominated the boards, the guests missed all of their 11 three-point shots in the first 16 minutes. James Gist scored around the basket, but Vazquez answered with a layup and a three-pointer by Ryan Toolson caused Panathinaikos to call timeout at 28-23. Diamantidis and Toolson traded triples and a dunk by Batiste restored a 33-26 Panathinaikos lead. A one-handed dunk by Sabonis fixed the halftime score at 33-28. 

Third quarter: Diamantidis shines and Panathinaikos takes off 

Maciulis nailed his trademark corner three-pointer immediately after the break. Suarez answered from downtown and a two-handed slam by Stimac made it a 3-point game. Unicaja was all over the place on defense, forcing the Greens to take many off-balance shots. Dragic buried a mid-range jumper off the dribble and a layup by Stimac tied it at 37-37. Diamantidis found Curry for an open three-pointer after a Panathinaikos timeout. Lasme took over with an alley-oop layup and a follow-up basket by Mike Bramos caused Unicaja to call timeout down 44-37. Fotsis fired one in from downtown to cap a 10-0 run, giving Panathinaikos a double-digit margin. Urtasun nailed a step-back jumper before Bramos scored again, as Panathinaikos had started to power the offensive glass. Bramos finished a three-chance offense with a corner triple and Loukas Mavrokefalidis bettered Vazquez's one-handed put-back slam with another three-pointer, good for a 55-41 Panathinaikos lead. 

Fourth quarter: Greens storm into playoffs

Suarez scored down low early in the fourth quarter, but Diamantidis scored again to keep Panathinaikos way ahead, 57-43. Diamantidis did even better with a three-pointer. Sabonis tried to change things with a reverse layup and a wild power basket by Gist sealed the outcome, 62-45, with seven minutes to go. Unicaja did not give up, as Granger scored in the paint, but Diamantidis ignited the crowd with a driving layup. Bramos split free throws, Granger banked in a mid-range shot and a tip-in by Stimac kept Unicaja within 65-49. Granger hit a stop-and-pop jumper and Sabonis split free throws, but it was already too little, too late for Unicaja. By the time Lasme made free throws, everything was said and done as the Panathinaikos fans had plenty of time to celebrate their team clinching a playoff berth.
