Στοίχισαν τα αμυντικά ριμπάουντ

Ήττα στην πρεμιέρα του 2ου γύρου υπέστη ο Παναθηναϊκός στο Ισραήλ με 73-70, καθώς δεν μπόρεσε να κάμψει την αντίσταση της Μακάμπι. Σε όλο το ματς ήταν κοντά στο σκορ και μέσα στο παιχνίδι, βασιζόμενος κυρίως στα τρίποντα (εκτέλεσε 33 τρίποντα και 31 δίποντα), προσπαθώντας να κάνει το cone back το οποίο δεν ήρθε ποτέ. Φάση κλειδί στο 69-66 το άστοχο καλάθι του Γιάνκοβιτς που ενώ ανέλαβε ωραία την πρωτοβουλία στην επίθεση να παίξει με πλάτη τον κοντύτερο αντίπαλό του, τον πέρασε με ωραίο ρολάρισμα αλλά, αστόχησε σε ένα φαινομενικά εύκολο καλάθι. Στη συνέχεια η Μακάμπι σκόραρε δίποντο, ο Σλότερ μετά αστόχησε από σε σουτ για δύο και τα λίγα δευτερόλεπτα που έμεναν δεν έφταναν στους πράσινους για να πάρουν τη νίκη.

Η αλήθεια αν θες να έχεις βλέψεις για 1η-2η θέση και πλεονέκτημα έδρας, πρέπει να χτυπάς τέτοια ματς-ντέρμπι. Ο Παναθηναϊκός είχε το 5-2 (αισίως 5-3) αλλά με 4 ματς να έχει παίξει στην έδρα του και περιμένοντας Ρεάλ και Μπαρτσελόνα στο ΟΑΚΑ στον 2ο γύρο. Προσωπική διαίσθηση πως θα καταλήξει προς 3η-4η θέση. Το καλό είναι ότι ηττήθηκε με 3 πόντους απόψε, διαφορά μικρότερη από όσο κέρδισε τη Μακάμπι στο ΟΑΚΑ, οπότε σε περίπτωση ισοβαθμίας μεταξύ τους έχει το πλεονέκτημα.

Όσον αφορά την εξέλιξη του ματς, αρχικά ο Παναθηναϊκός προσπάθησε όπως συνηθίζει να περάσει την μπάλα από τη ρακέτα με Μπατίστα και Γκιστ. Ο Γκιστ απόψε ήταν πολύ καλός με μεγάλη συνεισφορά σε άμυνα και επίθεση, ταίριαζε στα ελαφριά 5άρια της Μακάμπι (μιας και ο Σόφο δεν αγωνίστηκε) για αυτό και ο Ιβάνοβιτς πήγε σε κοντά σχήματα, με Φώτση - Γκιστ να αγωνίζονται περισσότερο σε σχέση με Μπατίστα, Μαυροκεφαλίδη και Λαβάλ. Ο τελευταίος έκανε το ντεμπούτο του απόψε με τους πράσινους, αλλά δείχνει ότι του λείπουν παιχνίδια.

Ο Παναθηναϊκός προσπαθεί να πάει σε κοντρόλ επιθέσεις, διαβάζει ωραία την άμυνα της Μακάμπι και βγάζει ωραία καλάθια. Ελέγχει αρχικά το ρυθμό. Είναι πολύ άστοχος από τα 6,75 μ. (ξεκίνησε με 1/10). Μετά το 5ο-6ο λεπτό αρχίζει και χάνει τη συγκέντρωσή του στην άμυνα και από κακές επιλογές στην επίθεση τρώει και πολλούς αιφνιδιασμούς. Πολύ αργές επιστροφές για τους πράσινους. Το ξέσπασμα αυτό δίνει ένα +5 στη Μακάμπι για το δεκάλεπτο. (22-17)

Η ρακέτα του Παναθηναϊκού με τα κοντά σχήματα να μην μπορούν να ανταπεξέλθουν καλά στην άμυνα, θυμίζει σουρωτήρι. Όποιος μπαίνει μέσα στο ζωγραφιστό σκοράρει. Η εικόνα αυτή συνεχίστηκε μέχρι τέλους. Ευτυχώς βελτίωσε τα ποσοστά του στα τρίποντα και δεν ξέφυγε πολύ μπροστά η Μακάμπι. Σκορ ημιχρόνου 38-30.

Με το Γιάνκοβιτς να βομβαρδίζει με 3/3 σερί τρίποντα καταφέρνει να μαζέψει τη διαφορά, προσδίδοντας άγχος στη Μακάμπι που δεν μπόρεσε να ξεφύγει και να παίξει πιο ελεύθερα. Αρνητικός ο Σλότερ απόψε, "δεν έβαζε τίποτα" απέξω και δεν μπόρεσε να καλύψει και οργανωτικά το κενό του Νέλσον. Κάπως βοήθησε ο Μποχωρίδης στο ρόλο αυτό για 11' που αγωνίστηκε. 

Πολύ καλός επιθετικά και ο Παππάς που ήταν αρκετά καλός επιθετικά με ωραίες διεισδύσεις, ενώ έβαλε και 2/5 τρίποντα. Αυτός μαζί με Γιάνκοβιτς και Γκιστ αποτέλεσαν τις κύριες επιθετικές αιχμές της ομάδας. Μαζεύει τη διαφορά στους -2 (54-52) νε το 4ο δεκάλπετο να προμηνύεται συναρπαστικό! 

Το μεγάλο πλήγμα για τον Παναθηναϊκό είναι τα αμυντικά ριμπάουντ. Η Μακάμπι ήταν σαφώς ανώτερη σε αυτόν τομέα (44 έναντι 33) και έτσι κέρδισε επιπλέον επιθέσεις. Αυτό ήταν και το κλειδί για τη νίκη των Ισραηλινών. Όσο ο Ιβάνοβιτς είχε μέσα Μπατίστα, Λαβάλ και Μαυροκεφαλίδη κέρδιζε τα αμυντικά (είχαν μαζί 13 ρ.). Επέλεξε όπως προαναφέραμε να πάει σε κοντύτερο σχήμα με Φώτση - Γκιστ (είχαν μαζί 5 ρ.) χάνοντας πολλά αμυντικά ριμπάουντ. 

Τελικά πάντα κυνηγώντας το σκορ, δεν κατάφερε να το γυρίσει και ηττήθηκε με 73-70.

Maccabi Electra outlasts Panathinaikos

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv held on for a 73-70 victory over rival Panathinaikos Athens at Menora Mivtachim Arena. The result broke a tie between the teams for second place in Group E; Maccabi improved to 6-2, while Panathinaikos fell to 5-3. The Greens, who beat Maccabi by 7 in Athens in the Top 16 opener, protected that difference to earn a tiebreak advantage should the teams be tied at the end of the Top 16. The game was closely contested throughout; Panathinaikos drew within 1 twice in the fourth quarter, but Maccabi held on and sealed the win with late free throws from Jeremy Pargo and Joe Alexander. Pargo led the champs with 16 points, while Alex Tyus, Yogev Ohayon and Alexander each scored 10. Nate Linhart added 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Vlantimir Giankovits scored 16 for Panathinaikos, Nikos Pappas had 15 and James Gist 12. Former Maccabi player and two-time Euroleague champ David Blu was honored during the game and inducted in the Maccabi Tel Aviv Hall of Fame.

First quarter: Cohen scores 6 points to lift Maccabi

Pargo got to the line for the first point of the game. Giankovits’s second-chance basket gave the Greens their first lead. Pargo hit a jumper over Gist as the 24-second clock sounded. A.J. Slaughter sank a jumper at the other end. Dimitris Diamantidis rejected Ohayon on a drive, but Devin Smith soon scored from behind the arc. Diamantidis assisted Esteban Batista on a layup to tie the game at 6-6. Gist threw down a two-handed jam, but Tyus drove and dunked on the next play. Nate Linhart took advantage of a Panathinaikos turnover and drove for a slam. Brian Randle’s block of Loukas Mavrokefalides led to a Maccabi fast break that MarQuez Haynes finished with a slam. Alexander banked in a shot to cap an 8-0 run. Diamantidis revived Panathinaikos with a three and Pappas free throws cut the cap to 14-13. Gist completed a 0-8 Panathinaikos run with a three-point play, which also sent Randle to the bench with 2 fouls. Alexander tied the game at 16-16. After Gist split free throws, Jake Cohen played the pick-and-roll with Haynes and converted a three-point play. Cohen drilled a three to end the quarter at 22-17.

Second quarter: Tyus, Pargo helps hosts to double-digit lead

Ohayon drove for a tough layup and then found Tyus for an alley-oop layup to finish a 10-0 run. Antonis Fotsis ended a four-minute scoring drought for Panathinaikos with a fast break layup. Randle dunked in transition to keep the champs in control. Pappas pulled up for a baseline jumper, but Randle turned a steal into an easy score for Cohen and a 30-21 lead. Pappas connected twice from downtown – Tyus sank free throws in between – to bring the Greens within 5. Pargo found Tyus for an alley-oop slam and Randle got a fortunate roll on a basket plus foul. Pargo attacked the rim to give Maccabi a double-digit lead. Diamantidis blocked Pargo and Giankovits scored from behind the arc to bring the visitors within 38-30 at the break.

Third quarter: Greens’ three-point shooting keeps it close

Giankovits and Pargo traded threes in the first two minutes of the second half. Giankovits’s fourth three of the game drew the Greens within 5 points. Diamantidis’s jumper made it 41-38. Tyus scored from the line, but Diamantidis bettered him with a three to make it 43-41 midway through the quarter. Linhart and Gist traded baskets. Panathinaikos missed shots to take the lead and Pargo converted a three-point play at the other end. Slaughter beat the shot clock with a tough three and Alexander finished with a slam at the other end. Pargo put on a show with a basket on Diamantidis. Pappas put together a three-point play only to see Ohayon answer with a basket-plus-foul. Pappas fought hard for an offensive rebound and turned it into a three that ended the quarter at 54-52.

Fourth quarter:

Randle’s offensive rebound led to an Ohayon triple, but Fotsis answered in kind. Smith grabbed an offensive rebound and found Alexander for a slam. Eleftherios Bochoridis drilled a three to make it 59-58. Ohayon waited a minute before responding with a three. Smith then put back Haynes’s miss on the break to give the hosts a 6-point cushion with five minutes remaining. After a timeout Giankovits muscled his way to a basket and Fotsis’s triple made it 64-63. Smith swooped in for a layup to keep the champs in front. Randle scored inside, but Gist matched him. Pargo came up with a steal and split free throws with 2:07 remaining to put Maccabi ahead 69-65. Diamantidis split free throws to make it a one-possession game. Alexander shined with key rebounds at both ends. He sank free throws with 1:02 left for a 5-point lead. Gist free throws made it 71-68 with 20.2 seconds left. Pargo’s free throws with 14.9 seconds left iced the game.

Ποδαρικό με νίκη

Μεγάλη νίκη και ποδαρικό με το δεξί στο Top-16 για τον Παναθηναϊκό, καθώς επιβλήθηκε της πρωταθλήτριας Ευρώπης Μακάμπι με 83-76. Οι πράσινοι ήταν για 3 δεκάλεπτα πίσω στο σκορ, αλλά με πολλά ψυχικά αποθέματα, πάθος και καταπληκτική άμυνα στο 4ο δεκάλεπτο, κατάφεραν και γύρισαν το ματς, παίρνοντας και σημαντική διαφορά 7 πόντων. 

Νίκη μεγάλης αξίας η σημερινή καθώς η Μακάμπι είναι από τα φαβορί του ομίλου και αν θες να έχεις ελπίδες πρόκρισης, πρέπει να χτυπήσεις όλα τα ματς στην έδρα σου και κάποιο/α εκτός. Και σίγουρα η Μακάμπι θα κάνει και εκτός έδρας νίκες στο Top-16. Αλλά όχι απόψε...

Λίγο αγχωμένα ξεκίνησε ο Παναθηναϊκός με ευδιάκριτο πρόβλημα στην αμυντική λειτουργία. Άφησε τη Μακάμπι να κάνει το παιχνίδι της και βρήκε ρυθμό. Της πήγαν και τα σουτ, καθώς της άφησε αρκετά ελεύθερα ο Παναθηναϊκός από τις κακές περιστροφές. Αργές επιστροφές και στην άμυνα με συνέπεια πολλούς εύκολους πόντους στον αιφνιδιασμό για την "ομάδα του λαού". Κακή αντιμετώπιση στα πικ εν ρολ, έφαγε 4-5 alley-oop καρφώματα από Πάργκο - Τάιους. Έτσι η Μακάμπι ξέφυγε στο σκορ από νωρίς με διαφορά που έφτασε ακόμα και σε διψήφια επίπεδα, με τον Παναθηναϊκό και να την κυνηγά  συνεχώς στο σκορ. Στο διάστημα αυτό είδαμε και ωραίες ιδιόρρυθμες άμυνες με προσαρμογές από τη Μακάμπι.

Το σκηνικό όμως άλλαξε στο 4ο δεκάλεπτο... Βελτιώνοντας εμφανώς την άμυνα, υπομονή στην επίθεση και τη βοήθεια του κόσμου, γύρισε το momentum του ματς και κατάφερε όχι μόνο να  το κερδίσει, αλλά και να πάρει και τη διαφορά (+7) με μοναδικό buzzer beater στη λήξη του Σλότερ.

Την ομάδα στο τέλος απογείωσαν οι Γκιστ και ο Σλότερ. Ο Γκιστ με την τρομερή ενέργεια που έβγαλε τόσο σε άμυνα (μοναδικό μπλοκ στον Πάργκο στο 37' - καθοριστικό για τη νίκη) όσο και στην επίθεση (μαχητικά ριμπάουντ και καλάθια). Ο Σλότερ με "κρύο αίμα" και "καυτό χέρι" έβαλε τα σουτ. Πολύ θετικός και ο Νέλσον, αφού βοηθάει στην άμυνα, καθώς μπορεί να πιέσει το αντίπαλο PG (κάτι που δεν το κάνει ο Διαμαντίδης), αλλά είναι και οργανωτικός, σουτάρει/παίρνει προσπάθειες μόνο όταν πρέπει (και συνήθως αύστοχες) και δείχνει ότι μπορεί να βελτιωθεί και περισσότερο (είναι σε βαθμό ετοιμότητας Β, όπως είπε και ο ίδιος).

Καθοοριστικό για την εξέλιξη του αγώνα το 5ο φάουλ του Πάργκο στον Μπατίστα, που βγαίνοντας από το ματς, έχασε η Μακάμπι τον οργανωτή της. Φέρει γενικότερα ευθύνη και ο προπονητής της Μακάμπι καθώς φαίνεται σε αρκετά σημεία η απειρία του. Χωρίς τον Γκέρσον , θα ήταν άλλη η ομάδα...

Μπατίστα: Πολύ καλός απόψε επιθετικά ο Ουρουγουανός, επανέρχεται στις αρχικές εμφανίσεις προ τραυματισμού. Αν και κουράστηκε σε κάποια σημεία και δέχτηκε η ομάδα πόντους εξαιτίας του.

Μας αρέσει και ο Διαμαντίδης που έχει πάρει ρόλο και στο σκοράρισμα της ομάδας, όχι μόνο με σουτ, αλλά απειλεί και με drive. Σίγουρα αυτό έγινε πιο εμφανές έχοντας και τον Νέλσον στο πλευρό του που βοηθάει στην οργάνωση και αναδεικνύει το νέο ρόλο του 3D. 

Τέλος τα εύσημα πρέπει να αποδοθούν και στον Ιβάνοβιτς, που είναι διορατικός, απαιτητικός, είναι καθηγητής και βοηθάει τους παίκτες να βάλουν τον καλύτερό τους εαυτό στο παρκέ. Δεν έχει εμμονές. Βλέπει ποιοι παίκτες μπορούν να βοηθήσουν σε κάθε ματς και αυτούς χρησιμοποιεί, βάση απόδοσης. Είναι ανοιχτόμυαλος άνθρωπος. Αυτό φάνηκε και σήμερα καθώς η μάχη κρίθηκε και από τους πάγκους. 

Για παράδειγμα, σε άλλα ματς άφησε τον Μπατίστα έξω (που είναι και ένας από τους παίκτες που διάλεξε ο ίδιος και έχει ξαναδουλέψει μαζί του), σήμερα που τράβαγε τον έβαλε και άφησε το Φώτση στον πάγκο (με 0 π. - που σε άλλα ματς είναι καταλυτικός για την ομάδα) . Είδε ότι ο Μπλουμς δεν του βγήκε το ματς (δεν έβαλε τα δύο σουτ που πήρε) και έτσι τον άφησε έξω στο κρίσιμο 4ο δεκάλεπτο. Μίκρυνε το rotation στο τέλος χρησιμοποιώντας τους παίκτες κλειδιά. Αυτό πρέπει να γίνεται σε τέτοια μεγάλα-κρίσιμα ματς. Δεν μπορείς να βγάλεις έναν ολόκληρο θεσμό τόσο μεγάλο με 6-7 παίκτες σε όλη τη σεζόν (σσ. Πεδουλάκη) από τη regular season. Σε αυτά τα ματς όμως επιβάλλεται. Οι καταστάσεις το απαιτούν.

Panathinaikos outlasts rival Maccabi in thrilling opener

Panathinaikos Athens started the Top 16 in style by holding on for an 83-76 victory over reigning Turkish Airlines Euroleague champion Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv on Tuesday at Olympic Sports Center Athens. The Greens came back from a double-digit third quarter deficit to tie it at 68-68 on an A.J. Slaughter triple midway through the fourth quarter. Strong defense, a big jumper by Slaughter and a clutch bank shot by Dimitris Diamantidis caused the visitors to throw in the towel before the final buzzer. Esteban Batista paced the Panathinaikos attack with 16 points, Slaughter scored 8 of his 15 in the fourth quarter and James Gist scored 10 of his 15 from the free throw line. DeMarcus Nelson added 12 points and 5 assists and Diamantidis posted 11 and 7. Nate Linhart, who started in place of injured bwin December MVP Devin Smith, and Brian Randle scored 18 points each for Maccabi, while Alex Tyus posted 14 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks and Jeremy Pargo dished 9 assists.

First quarter: Pargo leads Maccabi on the break for slim advantage

Tyus shot over Batista for the game’s first points. The Panathinaikos center put in his own miss to get the Greens on the scoreboard. Pargo dished to Linhart for a layup in transition. Batista’s steal led to a Slaughter basket. Pargo went for more highlights with alley-oop passes to Tyus; the first resulted in a dead ball, the second in a spectacular slam. Vlantimir Giankovits hit twice from the line for the hosts, but Linhart and Randle went at the basket to give the visitors a 6-10 lead. Batista scored over Sofoklis Schortsanitis and then drew an offensive foul from the big man. Linhart nailed a three to put the champs up 8-15. Nelson’s step-back jumper and Loukas Mavrokefalides’s free throw trimmed the deficit. Pargo turned on the highlight machine again with another alley-oop pass to MarQuez Haynes for a slam. Gist countered with a triple to get the hosts within 2. Pargo mad a short-jumper to give the visitors a 15-19 lead through 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Tyus shines first, but Panathinaikos rallies to get back within 2

Tyus fought to corral Randle’s missed three and then attacked the basket for a two-hnaded slam. After Nelson split free throws, Haynes found Tyus for a layup and Randle scored in the offensive glass for a 16-25 Maccabi lead. Mavrokefalides scored on the offensive glass, but Hayes’s three-pointer gave the champs a double-digit advantage. Randle added free throws before Tyus came through with a remarkable play that he started with a block and finished with a slam for an 18-32 lead. Panathinaikos came out of its slump with Gist free throws and a Slaughter jumper. Haynes buried a three, but Batista scored on back-to-back possessions – the second a three-point play – as the hosts closed within 27-35. Linhart banked in a shot, but a Giankovits triple made it 31-37. Pargo turned in another fantastic layup, however Diamantidis’s long pass set Giankovits up with a layup too. Pargo tossed another alley-oop layup, this time to Randle. Diamantidis sank a three to cut the gap to 5. Nelson then hit from behind the arc to make it 39-41. Jake Cohen rejected Giankovits at the rim and Pargo’s layup made it 39-43 at the break.

Third quarter: Randle gives visitors 10-point edge; Diamantidis keeps Greens in it

Batista read a pass perfectly from Pargo for a steal and slam just seconds into the second half. Nelson did the same moments later to tie the game at 43-43. Linhart drilled a triple to put the visitors back on top. With the 24-second clock winding down, Linhart was forced into a deep three and made it to restore a 6-point edge. Batista countered with a basket-plus-foul. Nelson made it a 1-point game, but Yogen Ohayon hit a three followed by a jumper from the elbow to make it 48-54. Slaughter halved the Greens’ deficit with a triple. Pargo fed Tyus to make it 51-56 midway through the quarter. Then Ohayon lobbed a pass to Tyus for a slam. A Diamantidis triple brought Panathinaikos within 54-58. Six straight points by Randle – 2 from a Pargo pass, 2 from Ohayon and 2 on the offensive glass – gave Maccabi its first double-digit lead of the second half. Gist and Mavrokefalides made free throws and Diamantidis came through with a steal and three-point play to bring the Greens back within 60-64.

Fourth quarter: Slaughter makes big shots for the hosts

Mavrokefalides split free throws to bring his team within a single shot. Randle’s jumper was matched by a Gist tip-in. After Sylven Landesberg and Gist traded free throws, it was 65-68 with six minutes remaining. A second-chance Slaughter three evened the score. Mavrokefalides’s baby hook gave Panathinaikos a 70-68 lead. Maccabi answered through a Pargo basket, but missed free throws by both Pargo and Ohayon kept the score even. Gist rejected Pargo at the rim before Nelson gave the hosts a 72-70 lead from the line. Pargo fouled out with 2:11 to go and Batista sinks the resulting free throws. Linhart drains a three to make it 74-73. Gist added 2 from the charity stripe with 1:23 left. Ohayon matched him 21 seconds later. Slaughter knocked down a mid-range jumper and Diamantidis banked in a clutch shot with 14.7 seconds left. After Haynes split free throws, Slaughter put in a three at the buzzer to complete an 83-76 victory.
