Θρίλερ!

Νίκη θρίλερ πήρε ο Παναθηναϊκός απόψε στο ΟΑΚΑ, κερδίζοντας οριακά στο τέλος με 74-69 τον Ερυθρό Αστέρα. Αν και η εκκίνηση του αγώνα δεν προμήνυε τέτοια εξέλιξη, τελικά οι πράσινοι κινδύνεψαν να χάσουν το ματς από την τελευταία ομάδα του ομίλου. Μίλησαν τα τρίποντα των Σλότερ και Διαμαντίδη στο τέλος που έδωσαν ένα σερί 10-0 (από 60-65 έκαναν το 70-65) και τελικά κατάφερε να πάρει την πολύ σημαντική νίκη, κάνοντας το 5-2 και ισοβαθμώντας με την Μακάμπι στη 2η θέση του ομίλου, στο φινάλε της 1ου γύρου.

Καταιγιστικός μπήκε στο ματς ο Παναθηναϊκός κάνοντας ένα εξαιρετικό 1ο δεκάλεπτο, σκοράροντας με κάθε τρόπο, βγάζοντας πολύ ενέργεια στο παρκέ. Εξαιρετική ομαδική άμυνα πάνω στον Μαριάνοβιτς (με double team από την weak side), βγάζοντάς τον εκτός ρυθμού και αναγκάζοντας ουσιαστικά τον Αστέρα να παίξει μόνο με τρίποντα (τα περισσότερα άστοχα). Με την ίδια 5αδα έβγαλε το δεκάλεπτο ο Ιβάνοβιτς. Εκπληκτικός ο Γκιστ, κλέβει - τρέχει - σκοράρει. Σκορ 1ου δεκαλέπτου 26-6.

Αναγκαστικό το rotation, βάζει 5αδα Φώτση, Μαυροκεφαλίδη, Μπλουμς, Νέλσον και Μποχωρίδη. Έξοδος και για τον Μαριάνοβιτς που κουράστηκε από το γρήγορο ρυθμό του ματς, μπήκε ο Zirbes για τον Αστέρα και εκεί φαίνεται να κερδίζει στο 5 τον Μαυροκεφαλίδη και ταυτόχρονα ο Ιβάνονιτς να χάνει τα όσα κέρδισε από την εξουδετέρωση του Μαριάνοβιτς. Χάνει τη χημεία ο Παναθηναϊκός, η εν λόγω 5αδα έχει σκοράρει 6-7 λεπτά, δεν μπορεί να πάιξει με πλάτη και αρκείται σε προσπάθειες 3 πόντων (άστοχες). Κάλυψε τη διαφορά ο Αστέρας. Επέστρεψαν στο 17' οι βασικοί και βελτιώνει τον επιθετικό τρόπο ανάπτυξής του με παιχνίδι πλάτης από τον Μπατίστα και καταφέρνει να να βάλει άλλους 7 και να γράψει το 37-29.

Μουδιασμένος και στο 3ο δεκάλεπτο, χάνει τη μάχη των ριμπάουντ (τελικά 31-47) και παίρνει εύκολους πόντους από ανανεώσεις. Δυσκολεύεται να αντιμετωπίσει τους ψηλούς μιας και ο Φώτσης έπαιζε με πρόβλημα στη μέση και δεν μπορούσε να δώσει το 100% (έπαιξε 13'). Ο Αστέρα φέρνει το ματς σ τον πόντο.

Η εικόνα αποβλάκωσης συνεχίζεται για τον Παναθηναϊκό. Ο Αστέρας πλέον καταφέρνει και περνάει μπροστά. Ωραίο τέχνασμα του Σέρβου coach που με 2 άμυνες ζώνης κολλάει ακόμα περισσότερο τους πράσινους, αφήνοντας επιδεικτικά τον (πρώην παίκτη τους) Νέλσον να σουτάρει, γνωρίζοντας ότι είναι κακός από τα 6,75 μ. Το σκορ είναι 60-65 στα 3-4΄πριν τη λήξη και επιστρατεύονται και πάλι οι βασικοί. Αν και έμοιαζε χαμένος, ο Παναθηναϊκός βρίσκει τη δύναμη και με αναλαμπή και σερί 10-0 με τρίποντα των Σλότερ και Διαμαντίδη δείχνει να αφυπνίζεται κάνοντας το 70-65. Το παιχνίδι γίνεται γρήγορο, δυνατό και πολύ σκληρό! Πάει στο 72-69 και τελευταία επίθεση ο Αστέρας με την μπάλα στα χέρια του (ατομιστή) Williams.  Ίσως θα έπρεπε να του κάνει φάουλ ώστε να μην τον αφήσει να πάει για τρίποντο. Ο Williams ευτυχώς αστόχησε σε τραβηγμένο τρίποντο για τρεις, ριμπάουντ από Γκιστ και γρήγορο καλάθι με Σλότερ στον αιφνιδιασμό. Τελικό σκορ 74-69. Η νίκη φυσικά μετράει και είναι σημαντική, έστω και με τον τρόπο που επιτεύχθηκε!

Panathinaikos holds off Zvezda at home

In a back-and-forth battle that went down to the wire, Panathinaikos Athens edged Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade 74-69 in the Greek capital on Friday. Panathinaikos stayed undefeated at home in Group E and improved to 5-2, while Zvezda dropped to 1-6. A.J. Slaughter paced the winners with 16 points. Esteban Batista added 13, James Gist had 12 while Dimitris Diamantidis tallied 11 points, 10 assists and 4 steals for Panathinaikos. Boban Marjanovic and Charles Jenkins led Zvezda with 17 points apiece. Marjanovic also collected 10 rebounds. Marcus Williams added 10 points for the guests. Panathinaikos had a great start on defense, holding Zvezda scoreless for five minutes, with Batista shutting down Marjanovic. Meanwhile, Slaughter and Gist paced the Greens throughout the first quarter and a triple by Diamantidis made it 26-6, after 10 minutes. Williams and Maik Zirbes fueled a 0-10 run that brought Zvezda back to life. A layup by Luka Mitrovic got the guests within 31-27, but Batista and DeMarcus Nelson extended Panathinaikos's margin to 37-29 at halftime. Zvezda finally got Marjanovic involved; he had 14 third-quarter points to bring his team within 52-51 late in the third quarter. A red-hot Jenkins and a jumper by Nikola Kalinic gave Zvezda a 60-65 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Diamantidis and Slaughter fueled a 10-0 run from which the Greens regained the lead, 70-65. Zvezda kept its chances alive until the final seconds, but Slaughter sealed the outcome with a fast break layup.

First quarter: Panathinaikos shines at both ends

Both teams struggled to score early until Gist stepped up with a one-handed slam in transition and followed that with a close basket for a 4-0 lead. Zvezda was held scoreless for more than five minutes. After a three-pointer by Dimitris Diamantidis, the guests called timeout. A.J. Slaughter sank a four-meter jumper to cap a 9-0 run, before Luka Mitrovic finally got Zvezda going with a layup. Slaughter scored in penetration and a second-chance layup by Gist made it a double-digit game. Slaughter hit another triple and a layup by Batista made it 18-2. Charles Jenkins scored in penetration and a layup by Boban Marjanovic brought Zvezda within 12. Gist struck from downtown and collected a steal that allowed Slaughter to give the Greens a 23-6 margin. Diamantidis nailed another one from beyond the arc to give Panathinaikos a 26-6 advantage after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: 0-10 run sparks Zvezda's rally

Gist took over with a high-flying layup early in the quarter. Jenkins tried to change things with a driving basket, which Marko Tejic followed with a layup that made it 28-10. Jenkins shined with a power layup – and the free throw that came with it, but DeMarcus Nelson stepped up with a driving layup and Tejic got the guests closer, 30-14. Maik Zirbes showed good timing with a tip-in and Marcus Williams followed free throws with a three-pointer that brought Zvezda within 9. Panathinaikos could not find the way to the basket and a put-back basket by Tejic capped a 0-10 run. Batista split foul shots and a dunk by Zirbes made it 31-25. Batista and Luka Mitrovic exchanged close baskets and a coast-to-coast layup by Jaka Blazic got Zvezda even closer, 33-29. Another layup by Batista and a buzzer-beater jumper by Nelson gave Panathinaikos some fresh air, 37-29, at halftime.

Third quarter: Marjanovic takes over

Batista made free throws immediately after the break and soon added a close basket for a 41-29 Panathinaikos lead. Williams stepped up with a three-pointer, but Gist split foul shots and Vlantimir Giankovits struck from downtown, which caused the guests stop the game at 45-32. Mitrovic and Batista exchanged dunks and consecutive layups by Marjanovic brought Zvezda within 47-38. Mitrovic provided a highlight with an off-balance layup and Marjanovic dunked twice in traffic to make it a 3-point game. Panathinaikos called timeout, but a red-hot Marjanovic dunked again. Giankovits split free throws and Loukas Mavrokefalidis gave the Greens a 50-46 edge. Marjanovic had his fourth consecutive slam and erased Mavrokefalidis's driving layup with yet another dunk. He split free throws to fix the score at 52-51.

Fourth quarter: Zvezda completes rally, Greens fight back

Tejic dunked to complete the guests' comeback, 52-53. Mavrokefalidis hit a one-handed floater in the paint, but Jenkins beat the shot clock with an acrobatic jumper. Nelson stepped up with a layup-plus-foul, but Jenkins insisted from downtown for a 57-58 Zvezda edge with over six minutes left. Antonis Fotsis joined the three-point shootout, however Branko Lazic answered with a layup and Jenkins added a wild three-point play for a 60-63 Zvezda lead. Nikola Kalinic swished a five-meter jumper for a 5-point edge. Slaughter came right back with a fast break layup. A three-pointer by Diamantidis tied the game and another one by Slaughter restored a 68-65 Panathinaikos lead. Diamantidis and Jenkins exchanged free throws and Giankovits gave the Greens a 72-67 edge with 59.4 seconds left. Williams hit foul shots, but missed a key shot from downtown that allowed Slaughter to seal the outcome with a fast break layup in the closing seconds.

Iron Mike (Bramos) και φύγαμε για... Top-16

Χωρίς να πιάσει υψηλή απόδοση ο Παναθηναϊκός επικράτησε του Ερυθρού Αστέρα με 69 - 63 στο ΟΑΚΑ έχοντας τον Μπράμο σε πολύ καλή βραδιά που ειδικά στο 4ο δεκάλεπτο, που με τις καλές άμυνες και την επιθετική οξυδέρκειά του, έδωσε τη νίκη στον Παναθηναϊκό με καταπληκτικά drive.Ο Ερυθρός Αστέρας δεν είχε να επιδείξει ιδιαίτερες ικανότητες και το απλό μπάσκετ που έπαιξε αντιμετωπίστηκε σωστά και αποτελεσματικά από τους πράσινους. Καλή άμυνα για τον Παναθηναϊκό με πολλά κλεψίματα, μέτριος επιθετικά, πολλές φορές κολλούσε στην επίθεση, έχασε τα αμυντικά ριμπάουντ αλλά αυτό δεν του στοίχισε. Πήρε φάσεις ο Κάρι και έβαλε τα καλάθια που έπρεπε, ουσία από Γκιστ και Μπατίστ, μέτριοι οι Ούκιτς-Ματσιούλις, κακός ο Φώτσης, σε κακή βραδιά και ο Διαμαντίδης.

4 νίκες - 4 ήττες ο απολογισμός μέχρι στιγμής, αλλά ο στόχος-πρόκριση στο Top-16 επιτεύχθηκε. Καιρός για τον Παναθηναϊκό να δοκιμάσει σχήματα στα επόμενα δύο ματς χωρίς άγχος καθώς πρέπει να βρεθεί περισσότερη χημεία κυρίως επιθετικά στο παιχνίδι του.

Η εξέλιξη

Οι πράσινοι έδειξαν από την αρχή διάθεση στην άμυνα. Το τρωτό του σημείο ήταν η άμυνα μέσα στη ρακέτα καθώς σε πολλές φάσεις οι ψηλοί του Αστέρα έκαναν πάρτι καρφώνοντας τη μπάλα με άνεση. Επιστρατεύτηκε ο εγκαίρως ο Μπατίστ να μαζέψει την κατάσταση αλλά μάταια. Ο Κάρι πήρε αρκετές προσπάθειες επιθετικά. Η φάση του αγώνα: στα τελευταία δευτερόλεπτα του δεκαλέπτου το pick & roll Διαμαντίδη - Γκιστ με alley-oop κάρφωμα-goal-foul του Αμερικανού. Σκορ δεκαλέπτου 20-21.

Ίδιο το σκηνικό και στο δεύτερο δεκάλεπτο και γενικά δε όλο το ματς με τις δύο ομάδες να είναι κοντά στο σκορ, τον Αστέρα να επιτίθεται πολύ μέσα από τη ρακέτα, τον Παναθηναϊκό να παίζει καλές άμυνες και καλή κυκλοφορία της μπάλας στο διάστημα που έπαιξε ζώνη ο Αστέρας (γι' αυτό και τη σταμάτησε σύντομα). Σκορ ημιχρόνου 37-34.

Σε αντίθεση με άλλα ματς δεν ήταν το 3ο το καλύτερο δεκάλεπτο του Παναθηναϊκού. Πολλά χαμένα αμυντικά ριμπάουντ και δυνατότητα στον Αστέρα για δεύτερες επιθέσεις. Με σύμμαχο όμως τις καλές άμυνες, κράτησε τη διαφορά παρά τις κακές του επιθέσεις και ανύπαρκτο επιθετικό προσανατολισμό. 52-48 και πάμε για φινάλε.

Με τον Ούκιτς να κρατάει πολύ τη μπάλα και να κουράζει στην επίθεση, το Φώτση να σουτάρει μόνο από μακρυά δίχως να παίζει στη ρακέτα, με κακές επιλογές σουτ (χαρακτηριστικό το σουτ-airball από τα 9 μέτρα στα τελευταία δευτερόλεπτα του ματς ενώ υπολείπονταν 7" για τη λήξη της επίθεσης- ευτυχώς δε στοίχισε στην ομάδα), αλλά έναν πολύ καλό Μπράμο που έβαλε παλικαρίσια καλάθια σε κρίσιμες στιγμές του αγώνα, ο Παναθηναϊκός πήρε μια μικρή διαφορά ασφαλείας και ο Αστέρας δεν κατάφερε να τον απειλήσει ξανά. Τέλος καλό όλα καλά.(;) Τελικό σκορ 69-63 σημαντική νίκη για τον Παναθηναϊκό αφού εξασφάλισε με τις 4 νίκες (στα 8 ματς) την πρόκριση στο Top-16.

Panathinaikos KOs Zvezda, breaks into Top 16

Panathinaikos Athens beat Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade 69-63 at home Friday to advance to the Top 16 and eliminated Zvezda in the process. Michael Bramos and James Gist came up big in the fourth quarter in helping Panathinaikos improve to 4-4 in the group. Ramel Curry paced the winners with 16 points, while Gist collected 15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals and 2 assists. Bramos had 8 points, 6 of them on three dunks in the fourth quarter. Crvena Zvezda dropped to 2-6 and after finishing the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season, will move on to the Eurocup Last 32. DeMarcus Nelson paced Zvezda with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists while Rasko Katic scored 13 points and Blake Schilb 10. 

First quarter: Zvezda opens strong, Greens come back

Panathinaikos coach Argiris Pedoulakis made two changes to his starting line-up with Dimitris Diamantidis and Stephane Lasme coming in for Loukas Mavrokefalides and Vlantimir Giankovits alongside Roko Ukic, Jonas Maciulis and Gist. Crvena Zvezda coach Dejan Radonjic brought in Branko Lazic and Ivan Radenovic to start with Nelson, Schilb and Boban Marjanovic. Radenovic opened the scoring for the guests and it was 0-6 after a Marjanovic putback. Mike Batiste came off the bench and finally got the hosts on the board with two free throws with 6:46 left in the quarter. A Marjanovic dunk made it 2-8. Maciulis hit two free throws and a three-pointer to start an 8-0 run for a 10-8 Panathinaikos lead. Katic entered the game and had an immediate effect for Crvena Zvezda with two baskets sandwiched around a Nelson steal and feed to Radenovic for a dunk for a 10-14 lead. A Katic baby hook increased the advantage to 11-16. Curry answered with a trey and then Diamantidis threw an alley-oop to Gist, who completed the three-point play to cut it to 17-18. Charles Jenkins and Curry swapped long balls and Crvena Zvezda was up 20-21 after 10 minutes. 

Second quarter: Neither side makes a big move 

Curry opened the second quarter to push Panathinaikos back ahead, but Katic scored a tip-in and Nelson hit a tough layup and a dunk off a steal by Schilb for a 24-27 cushion. Batiste and Gist knocked down jumpers to regain the lead for the hosts but Marjanovic dunked and Nelson hit two free throws for a 28-31 scoreline. Maciulis was again on target from long range to even the game. Mavrokefalides came off the bench and hit two baskets before Diamantidis’s tough layup sent Panathinaikos into the locker room ahead 37-34.

Third quarter: Nelson comes up big to keep Zvezda close 

Ukic opened the scoring in the second half with two free throws to make the hosts’ lead 39-34. But Nelson continued his strong game with the three straight baskets including a three-ball and put-back dunk three-point play to cut the deficit to 43-42. Marko Simonovic knotted it at 44-44. Bramos hit a lefty shot and Gist grabbed a steal and raced to the other end for a dunk to make it 48-46. After Katic evened the game again, Curry hit two free throws and Ukic’s runner fell as Panathinaikos was ahead 52-48 after three quarters 

Fourth quarter: Gist and Bramos take over late for Panathinaikos

Curry pushed the advantage to six points, 54-48, to start the fourth quarter. Schilb answered with a trey but missed the chance for a four-point play. The guests grabbed the offensive rebound and Schilb scored again to cut the margin to 54-53. Bramos had a great sequence with a steal and breakaway dunk and then taking a charge at the other end for a 56-53 lead. But Schilb fed Nelson for an easy basket and Nelson dished to Schilb for a trey from the right corner as the guests led 56-59. After a timeout, Gist threw down a reverse dunk and shortly thereafter hit a three-ball to give Panathinaikos a 63-61 lead with less than three minutes left. After a nifty pass, Bramos passed up a trey and threw dunk a big dunk for a 65-61 lead with 1:26 remaining. Crvena Zvezda failed to convert on offense and then watched Bramos throw down another monster dunk with 1:02 to go and a 67-61 cushion. The game was basically decided when Katic missed two free throws with 40 seconds to play and it was certainly done with Gist’s free throws late.
