Καμπανάκι για το Top-16

Τρίτος ανεξάρτητα από το τελευταίο ματς του στο ΟΑΚΑ με την Μπαρτσελόνα είναι ο Παναθηναϊκός (5-4 σκορ) που ηττήθηκε από την Αρμάνι στο Μιλάνο σε ένα ματς με αγωνιώδες φινάλε.

Μέτριο και για τις δυο ομάδες 1ο ημίχρονο. Ο Παναθηναϊκός με 12 λάθη δε μπόρεσε να "χτυπήσει" την Αρμάνι που δεν επέδειξε και ιδιαίτερες αρετές. Κινούμενη και απόψε στη φετινή της μετριότητα με παιχνίδι πολλών τριπόντων (7/30 3p. - 18/32 2p), αν και έχασε τη μάχη των ριμπάουντ από τον Παναθηναϊκό, ήταν άστοχη και δεν μπόρεσε να ξεφύγει στο σκορ. Από την άλλη, εξαιτίας των πολλών λαθών τους, οι πράσινοι δεν μπόρεσαν να περάσουν μπροστά στο σκορ. Το 32-30 αντικατοπτρίζει πλήρως την εικόνα του 1ου μέρους.

Με θετικούς Φώτση-Γκιστ, το Διαμαντίδη να μοιράζει ασίστ (11), τους Σλότερ και Μπλουμς να σκοράρουν από τα 6,75μ., προσπάθησε να γυρίσει το ματς, ήταν συνεχώς κοντά στο σκορ, αλλά στα τελευταία λεπτά έχασε δύο κρίσιμα αμυντικά ριμπάουντ που  του στοίχισαν.

Με το σκορ στο 66-64 και την τελευταία επίθεση 24' όλη για τον Παναθηναϊκό, έγινε κακή εκδήλωση καθώς ο Διαμαντίδης περίμενε μέχρι τα 7'' μέχρι να εκδηλωθεί επίθεση. Δεν γνωρίζω τι οδηγίες έδωσε ο Ιβάνοβιτς, αλλά δεν πήγε κανείς για πικ εν ρολ στο Διαμαντίδη (o Ράιτ ήταν στο 5), με συνέπεια να πάει μόνος του για drive στα 6-7''. Ομολογουμένως στενά μαρκαρισμένος από το PG των Ιταλών, ο 3D "μπουρδουκλωθηκε" και απλά κέρδισε επαναφορά από τη base line. Και πάλι μόνος του κερδίζει φάουλ στην επαναφορά στα 1,2'', αλλά αστόχησε στις βολές και το 66-64 γράφτηκε στο Μιλάνο.

Εντεκάδα κατέβασε ο Ιβάνοβιτς και ο Χαραλαμπόπουλος δεν αγωνίστηκε. Τα 5αρια έπαιξαν λίγο και δε βοήθησαν: ο Ράιτ έπαιξε 3', ο Μαυροκεφαλίδης 6' και ο Μπατίστα στην επανεμφάνισή του 15'. Αν αναλογιστούμε και ότι ο Παππάς έπαιξε 7' (άποντος), πρακτικά ο coach πήγε σε rotation 6-7 παικτών. Αρνητικός και ο Γιάνκοβιτς με 0 π. σε 25', με τους αντιπάλους του να του παίρνουν 2-3 φορές τη μπάλα μέσα από τα χέρια. 

Απαιτείται μεγάλη βελτίωση ενόψει Top-16 και ομαδική συνεργασία με καλύτερες επιλογές στην επίθεση, αλλά βελτίωση και στην άμυνα καθώς το επίπεδο θα είναι σαφώς ανώτερο. Πρόβα τζενεράλε την Παρασκευή στο ΟΑΚΑ με την Μπαρτσελόνα.

EA7 Milan edges Panathinaikos to clinch Top 16 berth

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan survived a tough fight to beat Panathinaikos Athens 66-64 at home and advance to the Top 16 of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. Milan, which improved to 4-5 in Group C, needed either a win or a loss by PGE Zgorzelec Turow at Bayern Munich to move on. The Italian champion actually secured a spot during the third quarter when Munich won. But Milan finished strong and took care of business, thanks in part to Panathinaikos veteran Dimtris Diamantidis missing two free throws with 0.7 seconds left which would have tied the game. Daniel Hackett led the way with 21 points for Milan, while Alessandro Gentile had 9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Janis Blums scored 13 points and Diamantidis had 12 points and 11 assists for the Greens, who dropped to 5-4 – having already qualified for the Top 16 before the game. Panathinaikos turned the ball over 21 times, losing despite out-rebounding Milan 41-28 and holding Milan to 7-of-30 (23.3%) from three-point range.

First quarter: Threes give EA7 Milan slim cushion

Milan coach Luca Bianchi swapped one player in his starting line-up with MarShon Brooks in the first five for Joe Ragland with Hackett, Gentile, Nicolo Melli and Samardo Samuels. Panathinaikos coach Dusko Ivanovic made one change to his line-up with Antonis Fotsis coming for Julian Wright alongside Diamantidis, A.J. Slaughter, Vlantimir Giankovits and James Gist. Hackett got the hosts on the board first with a tough basketoff the glass. Slaughter answered with a jumper and then a put-back off his own miss. Brooks evened the game and then made two free throws and a layup after a steal to give Milan an 8-4 lead going into the first TV timeout. Esteban Batista scored off the glass after some fine footwork for the guests before a Hackett triple from the right side made it 11-6. Diamantidis raced back down to the other end for a driving layup before Gentile grabbed a rebound and went coast to coast for a layup and a 13-8 Milan lead. There was then a stoppage in play late in the first quarter to fix a hole in the Paladesio parquet under the Panathinaikos basket. Gentile scored the first basket after the maintenance work to push the cushion to 7, which Slaughter trimmed with a three-pointer from the left side. But Melli’s three from the left wing left Milan up 18-11 after one quarter.

Second quarter: Panathinaikos trim 9-point deficit to 2

Blums came off the bench for the guests and got Panathinaikos right back into the game with back-to-back threes from the right wing to cut the deficit to 18-17, resulting in a Milan timeout. Ragland finally got the hosts on the scoreboard two minutes into the quarter with a driving layup. Shawn James came on for a hook shot and then a dunk off a pass from Hackett to up the Milan lead to 26-19, which resulted in a Panathinaikos timeout. Slaughter made a pair of free throws, but Hackett grabbed a steal and breakaway layup and then a great Bruno Cerella steal going out of bounds turned into a Linas Kleiza dunk and a 30-21 advantage with justmore than three minutes left in the half. Ragland got hit with a technical foul and Blums made the free throw and James Gist threw down a dunk on the ensuing possession. The Panathinaikos push continued as Loukas Mavrokefalides hit a layup and Diamantidis converted 2 free throws to bring the Greens all the way to within 30-28. But Hackett beat the final buzzer with a floater for a 32-28 lead at the break.

Third quarter: Ten lead changes in 10 minutes

Panathinaikos continued its strong play to start the second half with a long Diamantidis jumper and a Fotsis three-pointer to take a 32-33 lead. Milan went two minutes without a score until 3 Gentile free throws pushed the hosts back ahead 35-33. Slaughter converted at the other end and a Diamantidis three made it 36-38. Panathinaikos committed three straight turnovers while Samuels had a layup and then a three-pointer and was followed by a triple from David Moss for a 44-38 lead. Fotsis came back down and nailed a three-pointer to halve the deficit. Gist then made 2 foul shots and Panathinaikos led 45-46 after a Diamantidis triple – and a Milan time out. The lead switched hands on the next five possessions – on threes by Hackett and Slaughter and then a Samuels dunk and a put back off an offensive rebound by Gist before Gentile’s jumper made it 52-51 after three quarters.

Fourth quarter: Milan’s cushion just big enough late

Hackett converted an improbable basket and-one for a 55-51 lead to start the quarter. But Gist was fed nicely by Diamantidis for a dunk and Slaughter’s three put Panathinaikos back ahead, 55-56. Ragland answered with a three-pointer, which caused a time out for the Greens. Ragland came out of the talk with a layup and Cerella followed with a layup of his own as Milan went up 62-56 with three minutes left. Blums was able to nail a tough three-pointer, but Hackett punched right back with a three to make it 65-59. Blums knocked down a corner three and then Wright made 2 free throws to cut the margin to 65-64 with less than two minutes left. Both teams struggled to convert until Melli split free throws with 25 seconds left for a 66-64 Milan margin. Diamantidis initially lost the ball with 1.3 seconds left, but Panathinaikos retained possession. The veteran playmaker was then fouled with 0.7 seconds remaining, but missed both free throws to give Milan the win.

Πάντα μαχητής...

Έδωσε σκληρή μάχη αλλά τελικά ηττήθηκε ο Παναθηναϊκός από την Αρμάνι στο Μιλάνο, που για 3 δεκάλεπτα σκόραρε κατά βούληση, αλλά κόλλησε στο 4ο από την καλή άμυνα του Παναθηναϊκού. Οι Πράσινοι κατάφεραν να γυρίσουν το ματς από το -18 και να καλύψουν τη διαφορά του πρώτου αγώνα (+16) και με πολύ καλή εμφάνιση στο 4ο δεκάλεπτο, που συνδυαστικά με την αστοχία της Αρμάνι  από τα 6,75μ (που στο 1ο ημίχρονο σκόραρε με πολύ υψηλά ποσοστά), παραλίγο να κλέψει τη νίκη με άστοχο σουτ το Ράιτ στη λήξη, όπου αν ευστοχούσε έστελνε το ματς στην παράταση. Κρίσιμα για την εξέλιξη του αγώνα 3 συνεχόμενα χαμένα αμυντικά ριμπάουντ από τα 50" ως τα 30" πριν τη λήξη.

Ο Παναθηναϊκός είχε σε κακή βραδιά το Διαμαντίδη που έφτασε σήμερα τους 2000 πόντους. Ήταν άποντος μέχρι το 33' και το σημαντικότερο, δεν είχε κάνει ούτε μια ασίστ στο ίδιο χρονικό διάστημα, αν και είναι ο πρώτος σε ασίστ στην Ευρωλίγκα φέτος (7,2 / αγώνα). Προφανώς και στοίχισε αυτό στην ομάδα, αλλά δεν ήταν ο μόνος παράγοντας της ήττας. Οι πράσινοι στο 1ο ημίχρονο ήταν πολύ κακοί και σε αυτό συνέβαλε η απουσία του Κάρι που θα έδινε λύσεις στο σκοράρισμα, αλλά και στο ότι ο Ούκιτς (που ξεκίνησε βασικός) δεν βρήκε ρυθμό. Η απάντηση του Πεδουλάκη στη θέση των γκαρντ ήταν ο Ράιτ, που έκανε πρεμιέρα στην Ευρωλίγκα με την πράσινη φανέλα. Σκόραρε 17 πόντους, είχε 3 ασίστ και έδειξε "έτοιμος" να μπει στο "κλίμα μάχης" που απαιτούν οι συνθήκες. Είναι παίκτης με έφεση στο drive, είχε 7/10 δίποντα, δε σούταρε καθόλου τρίποντα και είναι ένα εργαλείο που θα χρειαστεί ο φετινός Παναθηναϊκός (εφόσον ο Ούκιτς είναι εκτός φόρμας και ο Παππάς ουσιαστικά δεν υπολογίζεται). Σίγουρα θα βοηθήσει στη συνέχεια και θα πάρει χρόνο συμμετοχής (ήδη σήμερα έπαιξε σχεδόν 24', με τον Ούκιτς να παίζει 13:30 και τον Παππά 4:30). Από την άλλη αν μπούμε και στην ψυχολογία των παικτών που δεν παίρνουν χρόνο συμμετοχής στα γκαρντ και βλέπουν τον Ράιτ να έρχεται ο και παίζει λες και είναι μέλος της ομάδας 2 χρόνια, είναι κάπως... Πήρε πάνω του και το τελευταίο σουτ (ίσως και δίκαια λόγω εμφάνισης). Ας ελπίσουμε πως θα τους αφυπνίσει αυτός ο εσωτερικός ανταγωνισμός...

Ο Γκιστ ήταν εξαιρετικός (21 π. - 9 ρ.) με 6/9 διπ., 2/3 τριπ., 3/3 βολές. Αναμφισβήτητα ο MVΡ του Παναθηναϊκού. Μας άρεσε η τάση που είχε σήμερα η ομάδα να παίξει μέσα από τη ρακέτα και να σκοράρει πολύ με δίποντα, χτυπώντας την Αρμάνι στο 5 που έχει θέμα... Επίσης έπαιξε έξυπνα με τα φάουλ σκοπιμότητας βλέποντας ότι Ιταλοί είχαν 62% στις βολές και λίγο έλειψε να πάρει και το ματς.

4-4 το σκορ και η συνέχεια αναμένεται "φωτιά" αλλά και πολύ πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα για τους λάτρεις της πορτοκαλί μπάλας!

EA7 Milan holds off Greens for sixth straight home win

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan survived a big rally from Panathinaikos Athens and held on for a dramatic 77-75 victory in the Game of the Week at Mediolanum Forum, the site of the 2014 Final Four. The win improved Milan’s record to 5-3 and at least a share of second place in Group E, while Panathinaikos dropped to 4-4, but does hold a head-to-head tie-breaker thanks to a 16-point win over Milan in Top 16 Round 1. Milan did not allow a field goal for more than seven minutes and used a 16-4 spurt bridging the first and second quarters to open up a double-digit lead. The hosts extended the margin to 18 points by going 8 of 11 from three-point range in the first half, and held a 41-26 advantage at halftime. But the Greens slowly rallied in the third behind newcomer Zack Wright and James Gist, and the two fueled a late 2-12 run that got Panathinaikos within 3 points. Samardo Samuels was the force inside for the hosts, however, and a triple from Bruno Cerella helped Milan hang on to its lead. Keith Langford paced the winners with 18 points plus 5 assists. Samuels had 16 points, and Curtis Jerrells netted 10 for Milan. Gist collected 21 points plus 9 rebounds for the visitors, Wright finished with 17 points, while Antonis Fotsis had 10 in addition to 7 rebounds in defeat. 

First quarter: Milan grabs control with defense and triples 

Samuels opened the game with a close-range basket for the hosts, and Gist scored inside for the Greens. After Jonas Maciulis scored a put-back, Nicolo Melli and Gist traded triples for 6-7. David Moss nailed a corner three for Milan, before Stephane Lasme and Langford traded layups to make it 11-11. After a timeout, in the remaining five minutes of the quarter, the hosts did not allow another field goal. Behind such defensive effort, Milan went on an 8-0 run. Samuels sparked things with a monster dunk, and with triples from Langford and Jerrells, the hosts held 19-13 advantage after the quarter.

Second quarter: Hosts pull away with a show from downtown

The run for the hosts continued in the second quarter, too. Gentile banked in a runner, before Jerrells sank another one from downtown, 24-13. Michael Bramos ended the visitors' drought with a dunk, but Langford hit another triple for a 12-point margin. Wright scored his first points in a Panathinaikos uniform when he stole the ball and raced for a layup, but Cerella had an uncontested layup of his own on the other end to make it 29-17. Gentile added another tough drive to the tally, before Cerella and Genitle hit Milan’s seventh and eighth three-pointers, making it 37-19. Quick layups from Wright and Bramos cut the deficit. Jerrells scored from close range, and Gani Lawal made a fastbreak layup, but Bramos beat the buzzer with a corner triple that made it 41-26 at halftime.

Third quarter: Gist and the newcomer Wright keep Greens in range

Fotsis started the third quarter with a second-chance triple. Ukic hit a floater to make it 41-32, but Langford nailed a triple to put Milan back into a double-digit lead. Gist had a tip-in, before Daniel Hackett drove for a layup high off the glass, 48-34. Gist drove an open lane for a monster two-handed dunk, but Samuels powered his way in traffic on the other end. Panathinaikos cut into the lead as Wright made a baseline floater, then went coast-to-coast for a basket-plus-foul, and a 52-41 score. Moss nailed a three-pointer to keep the Greens at bay, but a put-back from Fotsis followed by a breakaway basket-plus-foul from Maciulis got Panathinaikos within 55-46. Samuels kept making his presence felt inside, grabbing an offensive rebounds and making free throws before slamming home a powerful dunk over Gist, but Gist answered with a three-pointer to make it 59-49 after three quarters.

Fourth quarter: Panathinaikos forces drama, but Milan holds on

Samuels had a layup to open the scoring in the fourth quarter, but Gist had a tip-in with a free throw to make it 62-52. Now, it was the visitors’ defense at work, keeping Milan without a field goal for more than five minutes, while Wright scored a driving layup, Gist a put-back, and Fotsis a triple. After a timeout, Dimitirs Diamantidis scored his first points of the game, a layup cutting it to 64-61 with 4 minutes to go. Samuels split free throws and Langford hit 3 of 4, but Wright had a put-back and Gist slammed an alley-oop from Diamantidis to keep it a 3-point game. But Cerella sank a triple, and Samuels powered his way for another slam and 73-67 with under 90 seconds to go. After Fotsis made a pair from the foul line, Milan hustled to grab 3 offensive rebounds in the final minute and get Milan closer to victory. Wright’s layup cut it to 74-71, before free throws from Wright and Diamantidis got Panathinaikos within 76-75 with 4.5 ticks to go. Langford split his free throws, leaving the visitors 3.2 seconds for the final possession, but Wright did not manage to shoot a game-tying attempt in time, and the hosts celebrated a big win.
