Spanoulis lifts Olympiacos past Fenerbahce Ulker
Vassilis Spanoulis - Olympiacos Piraeus - EB14
In an outstanding battle between Turkish Airlines Euroleague giants that went down to the wire, Olympiacos Piraeus stayed undefeated in Top 16 Group F by edging Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul 68-74 on the road on Friday. Olympiacos ties for first place with CSKA Moscow each at 3-0 while Fenerbahce dropped to 1-2. Matt Lojeski paced the winners with 18 points. Vassilis Spanoulis added 16 and rescued his team in crunch time. Andrew Goudelock led Fenerbahce with 23 points. Jan Vesely added 13 while Bogdan Bogdanovic had 10 for the hosts. Vesely and Emir Preldzic shined early and a layup by Nemanja Bjelica allowed Fenerbahce to get an 18-11 lead. Olympiacos got within 22-16 after 10 minutes and managed to regain the lead, 26-28, on a close basket by Dimitris Katsivelis. The Reds found a go-to guy in Lojeski, who had 10 points late in the second quarter. A big three-pointer by Spanoulis fixed the halftime score at 36-43. Three-pointers by Tremmell Darden and Kostas Sloukas kept Olympiacos way ahead, 40-49, but an outstanding Goudelock kept Fenerbahce as close as 52-56 after 30 minutes. Bogdanovic gave the hosts a 68-65 lead in the next-to-last minute. Spanoulis shined with 6 unanswered points, including the go-ahead triple with 17.8 seconds left. Lojeski collected a key steal and sealed the outcome from the foul line.

First quarter: Preldzic, Vesely put Fenerbahce ahead

Bryant Dunston got Olympiacos going with a layup, as the guests made Fenerbahce for almost 2 minutes until Bogdanovic stepped up with a close basket. Preldzic scored off a midcourt steal, Dunston made free throws and a dunk in traffic but Darden put the Reds back ahead, 4-6. Preldzic kept pacing Fenerbahce with a one-handed floater and bettered Dunston's fast break slam with a three-pointer for a 9-8 score. Vesely shined with a put-back basket, as Fenerbahce kept reading the Reds' passing lines really well, not allowing them to circulate the ball. Vesely provided a highlight with a wild one-handed dunk that Spanoulis improved with an eight-meter bomb. Goudelock answered from downtown and a layup by Nemanja Bjelica made Olympiacos call timeout at 18-11. Oliver Lafayette buried a triple and Othello Hunter scored down low but Vesely and Bjelica gave the hosts a 22-16 edge after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Lojeski lifts Olympiacos

Hunter dunked early in the second quarter and a three-pointer by Lafayette made Fenerbahce stop the game at 22-21. The hosts kept struggling to score until Goudelock stepped up with a corner triple. Vangelis Mantzaris answered from downtown and a free throw by Kenan Sipahi gave his team a 26-24 edge. Georgios Printezis hit a one-handed floater from the left wing and a big basket by Katsivelis completed the guests' comeback, 26-28. Sipahi stepped up with a three-pointer, Lojeski found space for an uncontested layup but Goudelock hit a turnaround jumper and ignited the crowd with a wild three-pointer off the dribble for a 34-30 Fenerbahce margin. Lojeski shined with back-to-back three-pointers to restore a 34-36 Olympiacos edge. Printezis hit his trademark turnaround jumper, Lojeski scored in transition and Spanoulis bettered Vesely's free throws with a huge triple for a 36-43 Olympiacos margin at halftime.

Third quarter: Goudelock keeps Fenerbahce close

A corner three-pointer by Darden made it a double-digit game, 36-46, immediately after the break. Goudelock scored around the basket and Vesely added a two-handed dunk to keep Fenerbahce within 40-46. Olympiacos struggled to get Spanoulis involved due to Preldzic's excellent on-the-ball defense. Olympiacos did not allow any easy shots and Sloukas found space for an uncontested triple, good for a 40-49 lead. Preldzic nailed a five-meter jumper and Vesely stoke the show with an off-balance, acrobatic layup to ignite the crowd at 44-49. Lojeski rescued Olympiacos with a corner three-pointer but Bogdan Bogdanovic quickly answered from downtown and Goudelock buried his own shot from beyond the arc for a 50-52 Fenerbahce deficit. Spanoulis and Sloukas made free throws but Goudelock hit a turnaround jumper to keep his team within 52-56 after 30 minutes.

Fourth quarter: Spanoulis does it again!

Bjelica hit a running shot early in the fourth quarter and a driving layup by Goudelock tied it at 56-56. Olympiacos had been scoreless for more than 2 minutes and a three-pointer by Bogdanovic put Fenerbahce back in charge, 59-56. Bjelica capped an 8-0 run with a free throw, as Mantzaris scored around the basket for a 60-58 Olympiacos deficit with 6 minutes left. Lojeski took over with a reverse slam that Bjelica matched with a power layup. Vesely split free throws and Lojeski made it a one-point game, 63-62, with over 2 minutes remaining. Goudelock buried a critical triple to make Olympiacos call timeout at 66-62. Printezis answered from downtown, Bogdanovic scored in penetration and free throws by Spanoulis tied it at 68-68 with 1:24 left. Goudelock missed twice from downtown and a three-pointer by Spanoulis put his team back ahead, 68-71, with 17.8 seconds left. Lojeski collected a steal, drew a foul and split free throws to seal the outcome down the stretch.

Barcelona outlasts Greens after shooting show by Huertas

One of basketball's great rivalries lived up to its billing Friday as FC Barcelona needed a killer third quarter by Marcelinho Huertas to escape with an 80-76 home win over visiting Panathinaikos Athens. Both teams are now 1-1 in Group E of the Top 16. Huertas had a quarter he'll never forget, hitting 6 three-pointers in the 10 minutes after halftime. Five of those shots he hit consecutively in a three-minute span interrupted only by a timeout. The sixth fell in fortunately on Barcelona's last shot of the quarter, giving Barcelona a double-digit lead, 63-53. Panathinaikos, which had led by 10 in the first quarter on its own three-point barrage, came back to within a point, 77-76, on DeMarcus Nelson's fastbreak layup with 1:41 left before Justin Doellman's three-point play in the final minute finished the scoring and assured Barcelona the victory. Huertas led the winners with 22 points based on his 6-for-8 shooting from the arc and dished 5 assists. Doellman added 12 points while Mario Hezonja and Alex Abrines had 11 each. Nelson scored 16 on 8-for-9 two-point shooting for Panathinaikos, while James Gist added 11 and Esteban Batista pulled 12 rebounds.

FIRST QUARTER: Greens shoot their way in front

Deshaun Thomas hit a turnaround jumper for Barcelona to open the scoring. Doellman added a spinning bank shot from the post before Gist's swish put Panathinaikos on the board after 2 minutes. A steal by A.J. Slaughter then led to a fastbreak layup by Batista and a 4-4 tie. Barcelona paid for its fourth turnover in as many minutes when Slaughter drilled a triple for his team's first lead. Dimitris Diamantidis and Gist soon took advantage of open three-pointers, too, as the Greens pushed ahead 6-13. Gist then measured up the fourth consecutive shot from the arc for the visitors to make it 6-16. After a timeout, Hezonja drilled Barcelona's first triple and liked it so much, he hit another, pulling the hosts within 12-18. Antonis Fotsis added free throws to the Panathinaikos lead before Abrines got 2 points the hard way, on a nifty reverse in traffic, to lock in a 14-20 score after 10 minutes.

SECOND QUARTERS: Abrines caps Barcelona comeback

Vlantimir Giankovits put back his own miss to open the second-quarter scoring. Tomas Satoransky answered with a jumper, then Hezonja stepped up with his third triple to make it 19-22. A lull in scoring ended with Nelson burying a jumper and Huertas answering with a one-legged bank shot. And when Loukas Mavrokefalidis hit from downtown, Panathinaikos led 21-28. Nelson and Huertas traded baskets again beforeSlaughter beat the entire Barcelona defense for a layup at 23-32. Maciej Lampe got 2 points back for Barcelona at the foul line. Out of a timeout, Janis Blums became his team's fifth three-point striker, but at the other end, Doellman matched him from deep. After Ante Tomic rolled to the basket for a slam, Slaughter's free throws were answered with a tip-in by Abrines. Then Huertas found Tomic on the break for a layup that put Barcelona back within a shot of the lead, 34-37. That shot came with 4 seconds left in the half off the hand of Abrines, who was left alone to splash a three-pointer that was good for a 37-37 tie at the break.

THIRD QUARTER: Huertas goes wild from the arc

A two-minute scoring lull after halftime ended with Tomic scoring in close for Barca's first lead in almost 20 minutes, but Batista doing him one better with a reverse and free throw. That's when Huertas stepped up and hit back-to-back three-pointers that had the hosts up 45-40. Nelson got a driving layup back for Panathinaikos before great ball movement found Huertas open again for his third consecutive triple. Unbelievably enough, Huertas was left alone again and did not forgive the Panathinaikos mistake. His fourth strike in a row from long-distance put Barcelona in control, 51-42. After a timeout, Giankovits hooked a shot in for the Greens, but again they let Huertas shoot from the arc and again the Barcelona guard was on the mark from downtown, giving him 5 three-pointers in under 3 minutes. Diamantidis responded from deep, Hezonja and Giankovits traded baskets, then Batista finished a break to get Panathinaikos back within 56-51. Tomic emerged from the next timeout to dribble like a guard from the arc for a reverse layup and a 58-51 advantage. Nelson responded with a step-back jumper. Thomas put back a Barcelona miss, then Huertas beat the shot clock with yet another three - this one falling in with a little luck - but Fotsis did the same on the buzzer for a 63-56 score after three quarters.

FOURTH QUARTER: Barcelona escapes at the finish

Nelson, with a transition layup, and Gist, with a three-pointer, got Panathinaikos closer at 65-61 early in the fourth quarter. Lampe with a jumper and Brad Oleson from the arc and the free throw line pushed Barcelona further ahead, 72-65, despite baskets by Nelson and Mavrokefalidis. But when Mavrokefalidis blasted to the rim for one basket and then chased down 2 offensive rebounds that led to a triple by Fotsis, it was suddenly 72-70 with under 5 minutes left. Abrines, Tomic and Doellman then calmed the hosts by combining for 5 of 6 free throws at 77-70. Nelson responded with a reverse layup and Diamantidis got loose for another easy basket to make it 77-74 with 2 minutes left, setting up tense finish. A steal following a timeout sent Nelson ahead for a fastbreak at 77-76, but at the other end, Doellman got loose for a layup and the free throw that came with it, making it a two-possession game, 80-76, with under a minute left. That's where the score stayed after Panathinaikos committed a costly turnover, allowing Barcelona to escape with its first victory of the Top 16.

Olympiacos routs EA7 Milan

In the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Game of the Week, Olympiacos Piraeus used its defense and three-point shooting to rout EA7 Emporio Armani Milan 81-58 at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Thursday night. Olympiacos improved to 2-0 in Group F, while Milan dropped to 0-2. The visitors led early, but the Reds used a 7-0 and a 9-0 run in the second quarter to take the lead for good. Olympiacos made a 10-0 run at the start of the third for 49-35 margin, and kept the lead for good. Four three-pointers during an 23-3 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters broke the game wide open. Brent Petway and Oliver Lafayette each had 13 points in victory, while Matt Lojeski scored 12 points with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Georgios Printezis also scored 12 in victory, while Kostas Sloukas had 9 points and 6 assists. Alessandro Gentile was the lone double-digit scorer for the visitors with 12 points, while Samardo Samuels had 9 points and 6 rebounds.

First quarter: Melli’s triples help Milan to an early lead

The first basket of the game was a Vassilis Spanoulis free throw after a technical foul on coach Luca Banchi - a rare occurrence to open the scoring. It was the only basket for almost three minutes until Spanoulis drove the baseline and dished to Petway for a basket-plus-free throw, 4-0. Nicolo Melli sank a triple to open Milan’s account, but Spanoulis was on a mission from the get-go, driving for a layup and splitting foul shots to make it 7-3. David Moss knocked down a baseline jumper, and Gentile’s free throws tied the score, before Petway scored from close range. Daniel Hackett fought his way for a basket inside on the other end, and a put-back from Samuels gave the visitors the lead, 10-11. After Shawn James added 2 free throws to Milan’s tally, Lojeski answered with a backdoor layup for the Reds, but Melli hit from deep and MarShon Brooks nailed a difficult step-back jumper to make it 13-18 at the end of the quarter.

Second quarter: A pair of runs put Olympiacos in front

Gentile made a runner to extend the lead to 7 points, but Othello Hunter had an alley-oop slam and Sloukasscored a layup in traffic for the hosts. A corner triple from Lafayette tied it at 20-20 before Gentile snapped a 7-0 run with a short jumper. Hackett padded the lead to 20-24 with a pair of free throws, and after Lojeski drove for an easy layup, Brooks sank a jumper for Milan. But Lojeski had another layup, Hunter a big slam dunk, and Dimitrios Katsivelis hit a corner three-pointer to move ahead 29-26. Printezis extended the difference to 5 points from close range, before Hackett split free throws to snap a 9-0 run, and Linas Kleiza had a tip-in to keep the visitors within 32-29. Brooks had a layup for Milan, but Sloukas and Spanoulis kept the lead for the hosts from the free throw line, and a basket from Printezis made it 37-31. Milan answered with Samuelsscoring in traffic, and after Spanoulis drove for a layup, Kleiza made another basket that got Milan to 39-35 at halftime.

Third quarter: Reds pull away with a 10-0 run

Petway hit a triple to open the quarter, and a pair of free throws from Spanoulis made it 44-35. The Reds kept the visitors without a single basket for almost four minutes to start the second half, a span during which Milan’s Samuels got into foul trouble with 4 personal fouls. Petway’s second three-pointer, and Spanoulis feeding Bryant Dunston for an alley-oop dunk opened a 49-35 margin. After a timeout, Gentile buried a three-pointer to snap a 10-0 run and Milan switched to zone defense. Petway hit a baseline jumper, but the visitors countered with a jumper from Moss, a big block from James, and a driving layup from Gentile to get within 51-42. Milan did not allowing a single basket for more than four minutes, and Moss scored a put-back to cut the deficit some more. After Sloukas snapped a 2-9 run with 2 free throws, Lafayette sank a three-pointer for a 56-44 lead.

Fourth quarter: Olympiacos defense, triples break the game wide open

Lafayette opened the fourth quarter with a corner triple that extended the margin to 15 points, and Sloukas’s free throws made it 61-44, giving the Reds complete control. A long jumper from Sloukas extended the difference to 63-45, but the run was far from over. Printezis hit a three-pointer, then used a no-look pass from Sloukas for a 68-46 advantage. Back-to-back threes from Lojeski and Lafayette extended it to 74-47. Dunstonscored in the traffic for the visitors, snapping an 18-3 run, but the outcome was already decided by then. Before the end, Lojeski and Dunston had dunks for the hosts, while Joe Ragland made a triple and a fastbreak layup for the visitors, as Olympiacos closed it out strong.
